London Builder Denies Being Banksy After New Identity Claims

London Builder Denies Being Banksy After New Identity Claims

March 19, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

A London builder is vehemently denying persistent rumors that he is the elusive street artist Banksy, telling those who believe the claims to “grow up and get a life.” George Georgiou, a North London resident, has been repeatedly mistaken for Banksy since he was photographed installing protective Perspex over a mural that appeared on Hornsey Road in 2024. The renewed speculation follows a recent investigation by Reuters that identified Robin Gunningham as the artist, though the findings haven’t entirely quelled the theories surrounding Georgiou.

The Hornsey Road mural, depicting a tree with paint dripping like a crown, sparked the initial wave of comparisons. Georgiou, the father of the building’s landlord, was simply trying to safeguard the artwork when onlookers began noting a resemblance to images of Gunningham, first linked to Banksy by The Mail on Sunday back in 2008. As reported by the Daily Mail, the builder is now frustrated by the ongoing attention.

The Banksy Identity Question: A Long-Running Mystery

The Reuters investigation, published earlier this month, presented a compelling case for Gunningham, citing evidence including a 2022 trip to Ukraine alongside Massive Attack’s Robert De Naja and a handwritten confession from a 2000 arrest in New York. However, Banksy’s lawyer, Mark Stephens, has disputed the report’s accuracy, arguing it would violate the artist’s privacy and potentially endanger him. Stephens emphasized that anonymity is crucial for Banksy’s work and safety. NME reports that Stephens believes the story “would violate the artist’s privacy, interfere with his art and put him in danger.”

This isn’t the first attempt to unmask Banksy. A 2003 BBC radio recording resurfaced in 2023, sparking further debate, and a potential legal battle in 2024 threatened to force the artist to reveal his identity. The artist’s penchant for secrecy has fueled decades of speculation, with previous theories even pointing to De Naja himself.

From Protective Measures to Public Scrutiny

Georgiou, however, maintains his innocence, dismissing the rumors as “annoying, ridiculous and disturbing.” He explained to the Daily Mail that his actions in 2024 were simply a favor to his sons, the building owners. “I’m not Banksy… The first day, it was a laugh. It’s a bit of an old joke now,” he said. He also expressed frustration with the constant interruptions to his work. “It’s just the day-to-day, every five minutes you pick up the bloody phone and it’s just someone having a giggle.”

He went on to say he doesn’t see the resemblance to Gunningham and, somewhat ironically, wishes he *were* Banksy, quipping that at least then “no one would know who the fuck I am.” Georgiou’s primary concern seems to be the disruption to his daily life, describing the attention as “a pain in the butt.”

A Mural That’s Grow More Trouble Than It’s Worth

Interestingly, Georgiou doesn’t seem particularly pleased with the Banksy mural itself. He revealed that the side of the building was actually scheduled for a repaint in the spring of 2024, but the artwork has prevented them from proceeding. “It’s all been a big waste of time to be honest… It’s a bit of graffiti at the end of the day,” he stated. He added that the mural is now “flaky” and “looks bloody horrible,” and he’d prefer to simply “get rid of it.”

Banksy’s work, which emerged in the 1990s, is renowned for its distinctive stenciled spray paintings and often politically charged commentary. His pieces have commanded millions of dollars at auction, solidifying his status as a major figure in contemporary art. Recent works include a mural outside the Royal Courts of Justice, widely interpreted as a protest against the arrests of Palestine Action supporters, and a dummy immigrant boat that appeared during an IDLES performance at Glastonbury 2024 – a stunt the band themselves were reportedly unaware of.

What’s Next for the Banksy Mystery?

Despite the Reuters investigation and the ongoing speculation, Banksy’s identity remains officially unconfirmed. The artist’s legal team continues to defend his anonymity, and Banksy himself has remained silent on the matter. For George Georgiou, the hope is that the attention will eventually die down, allowing him to return to his work without further interruption. The situation highlights the enduring fascination with Banksy and the lengths to which people will travel to uncover the identity of the artist behind the iconic imagery. The artist’s next move, as always, is anyone’s guess, but given the history, it’s likely to be unexpected and impactful.
