Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere – Netflix Doc Review & Key Figures

Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere – Netflix Doc Review & Key Figures

March 11, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Louis Theroux is, by most accounts, back to his best. After a period that saw his work prompting some critical questioning, the documentarian has delivered a string of compelling projects, culminating in Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere, now streaming on Netflix. The film, which explores the online world of male influencers peddling often-toxic ideologies, is being hailed as a meta-masterpiece and easily one of his greatest achievements to date.

The turnaround is particularly notable given recent reactions to Theroux’s work. A 2022 documentary focusing on Florida’s rap scene, Rap’s New Frontline, drew criticism for potentially inflaming existing conflicts and appearing somewhat out of touch with the realities of the music and the communities surrounding it. As NME noted, some felt he “poked, prodded and risked inflaming rap beefs as though unaware that this could have potentially fatal real-world consequences.” However, 2023’s The Settlers, documenting Israeli settlers in the West Bank, signaled a return to form and Inside the Manosphere solidifies that momentum.

Navigating the Algorithmic Rabbit Hole

Inside the Manosphere doesn’t simply present the figures at the center of this online world. it dissects the mechanisms that allow their ideas to spread. The film examines the algorithmic forces at play on social media platforms, the rise of conspiracy theories, and the parasocial relationships that fuel the success of these influencers. Theroux reportedly began working on the project as early as 2025, predating some similar explorations of the topic, such as the Netflix series Adolescence, though he acknowledges a thematic overlap.

The documentary features interviews with several prominent figures within the “manosphere,” including Harrison Sullivan (HSTikkyTokky), accused of homophobia and sexism; Myron Gaines, author of the provocatively titled Why Women Deserve Less; and Sneako, whose beliefs are rooted in apocalyptic interpretations of religious texts, reportedly triggered by Sam Smith’s performance at the Grammys. Perhaps surprisingly, Theroux also profiles Justin Waller, who describes a highly unconventional monogamous relationship, and who comes across as comparatively less extreme within this group.

The Allure of Extremism and the Illusion of Control

Theroux doesn’t shy away from presenting the views of these individuals, however objectionable they may be. Gaines, for example, claims women are inherently deceptive due to their menstrual cycles – a statement that underscores the absurdity of the ideologies being explored. Despite the obvious extremism, these figures command significant audiences, drawn to their combative content and promises of simple answers. Gaines, notably, invites women onto his podcast specifically to humiliate them, while Sullivan has livestreamed violent acts committed by his associates, subsequently repackaged for social media alongside gambling advertisements.

A key element of the film is the tension between Theroux’s presence and the subjects’ awareness of being filmed. The influencers appear simultaneously eager for the legitimacy that mainstream media exposure might provide and deeply suspicious of Theroux’s intentions. Sullivan, for instance, repeatedly switches between addressing the camera as he would on TikTok and attempting to maintain a more conventional documentary interview demeanor, highlighting the constructed nature of reality in the digital age. His associates’ constant livestreaming of the film’s production further blurs the lines between documentary and performance.

Beyond the Surface: Trauma and Political Undercurrents

While the film doesn’t shy away from the disturbing content these influencers produce, Theroux also attempts to explore the underlying trauma that may drive their behavior and attract their followers. However, this exploration remains relatively brief. The documentary also touches only lightly on the broader political implications of the “manosphere’s” often Make America Great Again-adjacent messaging. As the review in NME points out, Theroux ultimately frames these figures as “scared, insecure little boys offering simple answers in a complex world that has left them feeling adrift.”

The Theroux Renaissance: From Podcast Stumbles to Documentary Triumph

This latest work represents a significant creative resurgence for Theroux. His earlier foray into podcasting, while initially popular, faced criticism for its often-superficial celebrity interviews. The Florida rap scene documentary also proved divisive. However, The Settlers and now Inside the Manosphere demonstrate a renewed focus on complex, politically charged subjects, handled with Theroux’s signature blend of curiosity and unflinching observation. His ability to gain access to and critically examine these fringe ideologies, while acknowledging the human element within them, is what sets his work apart.

What’s Next for Theroux?

Currently, there’s no confirmed information regarding Theroux’s next project. Given the success of Inside the Manosphere, it’s likely Netflix will be keen to continue their collaboration. The documentary’s exploration of the darker corners of the internet and the forces shaping contemporary culture suggests a potential direction for future investigations. Theroux’s track record indicates a willingness to tackle challenging and controversial topics, and audiences will undoubtedly be eager to notice what he turns his attention to next.
