Love Story Series: Controversy, Criticism & Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy Style Impact

Love Story Series: Controversy, Criticism & Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy Style Impact

March 10, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The Ryan Murphy series Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette continues to draw criticism, this time from a central figure depicted in the show: Daryl Hannah. The actress, who dated Kennedy Jr. From 1988 to 1994, has publicly denounced her portrayal in the series, calling it a “not even a remotely accurate representation” of her life and relationship with JFK Jr. The controversy adds to a growing chorus of disapproval surrounding the Netflix series, which has already faced backlash from the Kennedy family.

A Family’s Discomfort and a Rising Star’s Rebuke

Hannah’s critique, published in an essay for The New York Times, is the latest in a series of objections to the show’s depiction of events. Jack Schlossberg, JFK Jr.’s nephew, previously described the series as a “grotesque display” motivated by profit, stating that Ryan Murphy “knows nothing about what he’s talking about.” The family’s concerns center on the show’s dramatization of a deeply personal and ultimately tragic period in their lives. Hannah’s statement echoes these sentiments, focusing specifically on the inaccuracies surrounding her own characterization.

The series, which premiered February 12th, attempts to fill in the gaps surrounding the high-profile relationship between Kennedy Jr. And Bessette, who married in 1996 and tragically died in a plane crash in 1999. Though, the show’s creative liberties have clearly struck a nerve with those who knew the couple personally. Dree Hemingway portrays Hannah in the series.

Before Carolyn: The Kennedy-Hannah Years

Daryl Hannah and John F. Kennedy Jr.’s relationship spanned six years, beginning in 1988. They met initially in the early 1980s while their families vacationed in St. Martin, but their connection solidified years later at the wedding of Kennedy’s aunt, Lee Radziwill, to director Herbert Ross, who had recently worked with Hannah on the film Steel Magnolias. Vanity Fair details how this re-encounter sparked a highly publicized romance.

At the time, Kennedy was a law student at NYU and already a public figure due to his lineage – he was even named People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 1988. Hannah, meanwhile, was establishing herself as a prominent actress, known for roles in films like Blade Runner (1982), Roxanne (1987), and Wall Street (1987). Despite their seemingly different paths, both shared a love for the outdoors, enjoying activities like skiing and camping, according to People Magazine.

The Show’s Impact and the Bessette Legacy

Beyond the controversy surrounding its accuracy, Love Story has also sparked renewed interest in the fashion of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. BFM Business reports that Google searches for Calvin Klein – a brand frequently worn by Bessette-Kennedy – have increased by 140% since the series’ release. The show has also prompted discussions about the iconic wedding dress Bessette-Kennedy wore, designed by Narciso Rodriguez. Yahoo Life France highlighted the enduring fascination with the dress and its influence on bridal fashion.

Rosanna Arquette, a friend of Hannah’s, has also come to her defense, dismissing criticisms of Hannah’s characterization as “bullshit” and affirming the actress’s integrity. Parismatch.com reported on Arquette’s vocal support.

Navigating Fact and Fiction in Biographical Dramas

The backlash against Love Story underscores the challenges inherent in dramatizing real-life events, particularly those involving public figures and their families. While biographical series and films often take creative liberties to fill in gaps and enhance narrative tension, they also risk misrepresenting individuals and causing emotional distress to those who knew them. The line between entertainment and exploitation becomes particularly blurred when dealing with tragedies like the deaths of Kennedy Jr. And Bessette-Kennedy.

The show’s producers have not yet publicly responded to the latest wave of criticism from Hannah and Arquette. It remains to be seen whether the controversy will impact the series’ viewership or future seasons. However, the ongoing debate highlights the importance of sensitivity and accuracy when portraying real-life stories on screen.

Future Rollout and Potential for Further Commentary

As of now, Netflix has not announced plans for a second season of Love Story. The streaming platform typically evaluates viewership numbers and critical reception before greenlighting additional installments. Given the current controversy, any potential continuation of the series would likely face increased scrutiny and demands for greater accuracy. Further commentary from the Kennedy family and those close to the couple is also anticipated, potentially shaping the narrative surrounding the show and its portrayal of their lives.
