Lykke Li – ‘Knife In The Heart’: New Single & ‘Afterparty’ Album Details

Lykke Li – ‘Knife In The Heart’: New Single & ‘Afterparty’ Album Details

March 15, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Lykke Li is leaning into a rawer, more vulnerable sound with her upcoming sixth studio album, ‘The Afterparty,’ and the latest single, “Knife In The Heart,” offers a stark glimpse into that evolution. Released today, March 15, 2026, the track is a sonic collision of orchestral arrangements, a droning EBow, and what Li herself describes as a “brutalist nursery rhyme anthem.” It’s a soundscape born from a period of intense introspection following the birth of her son and a desire to confront the darker aspects of the human experience.

The song’s power, according to Li, lies in its juxtaposition: the voices of her son and his friend layered against the unsettling texture of the EBow. “A world totally collapsing in front of us and all we really have left is our humanity,” she explained in a statement. She even envisions a stadium full of fans chanting the song’s chorus, seeing it as “a pretty accurate description of what it feels like to be alive right now.”

From ‘EYEYE’ to Existentialism: A Shift in Perspective

‘The Afterparty,’ due May 8 via Neon Gold Records/Futures, marks a significant departure for the Swedish singer-songwriter. Her previous album, 2022’s critically acclaimed ‘EYEYE’, was praised by NME for its atmospheric depth and emotional resonance. But where ‘EYEYE’ explored themes of intimacy and connection, ‘The Afterparty’ delves into more challenging territory: mortality, hedonism, and the acceptance of one’s “lower self.”

This shift in focus is reflected not only in the music but also in the album’s visual aesthetic. The cover art, featuring Li’s face distorted by translucent tights, is deliberately unsettling. “I find that we’re in an era where everyone is talking about ‘My higher self,’” she stated. “Fuck that. This is an album dealing with your lower self: your necessitate for revenge, your shame, despair.” It’s a rejection of the self-improvement narrative and an embrace of the messy, imperfect realities of human existence.

A Maximalist Approach to Sound and Emotion

“Knife In The Heart” exemplifies this fresh direction. The track’s anthemic chorus and intense orchestration stand in contrast to the introspective lyrics, creating a dynamic tension that is both captivating and unsettling. It builds on the foundation laid by the album’s first single, “Lucky Again,” which incorporated samples from composer Max Richter and blended orchestral and electronic elements. Both songs suggest a willingness to experiment with sound and push the boundaries of her established style.

The album itself was written primarily in Los Angeles and recorded in Stockholm, Sweden, with a 17-piece orchestra. Li incorporated unconventional elements into the sessions, including what she described as “apocalyptic bongos,” aiming for a dramatic and orchestral sound that sets it apart from her previous work. This maximalist approach reflects a desire to create a truly immersive and emotionally resonant experience for the listener.

Beyond the Album: A Busy Year for Lykke Li

The release of ‘The Afterparty’ is just one part of a busy year for Lykke Li. She’s slated to perform at both weekends of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, alongside artists like Robyn and Wolf Alice. She’ll also be joining The Last Dinner Party and Wolf Alice on tour this summer, including a significant performance at London’s Finsbury Park with Wolf Alice – their biggest headline concert to date.

Her creative output extends beyond her own albums. In 2025, she released a covers EP and co-wrote Miley Cyrus’s song “Beautiful That Way” for the Pamela Anderson film, ‘The Last Showgirl’. She also reimagined her track “Highway to Your Heart” from ‘EYEYE’ as “TЯAƎH ЯUOY OT YAWHӘIH,” demonstrating a willingness to explore different sonic territories and collaborate with other artists.
