Málaga Film Festival 2026: Rain Threat & Cinema Highlights

Málaga Film Festival 2026: Rain Threat & Cinema Highlights

March 6, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The 29th Festival de Málaga officially kicks off tonight, but organizers are keeping a close eye on the weather forecast – and logistical challenges – as the annual celebration of Spanish cinema gets underway. A threat of rain looms, but the bigger concern is navigating the disruption to Spain’s high-speed rail network and ensuring a smooth arrival for the festival’s star guests.

The opening gala, set to commence at 6:30 PM local time at the Teatro Cervantes, will be hosted by actress Kira Miró and feature a performance by the musical group Sanguijuelas del Guadiana, the flamenco quartet Las Migas, and singer Lia Kali. The event will premiere ‘Calle Málaga,’ a drama directed by Moroccan-Spanish filmmaker Maryam Touzani (‘The Blue Caftan’) and starring the celebrated Carmen Maura. The Festival de Málaga runs through March 14th.

Navigating Travel Disruptions

This year’s festival faces an unusual hurdle: the suspension of the high-speed rail line. To mitigate the impact, organizers have chartered a flight from Madrid to ensure guests arrive in Málaga without delay. They’ve also established a shuttle service from Antequera station for those traveling by rail. These logistical adjustments underscore the festival’s commitment to accommodating its attendees despite the transportation challenges.

A Diverse Program of Spanish Cinema

Beyond the opening night fanfare, the festival boasts a robust lineup of 263 films from 71 countries. The official selection includes a mix of auteur cinema and comedies, signaling a return to broader appeal for the event. The program is divided into two key periods: January 8th to February 1st and April 22nd to May 30th, utilizing the Teatro Cervantes and Teatro Echegaray as central venues. The 43rd Festival de Teatro de Málaga runs concurrently, adding to the city’s vibrant cultural scene.

Spotlight on New Voices and Established Talent

‘Calle Málaga’ isn’t the only film generating buzz. The festival will showcase ‘Altas capacidades’ (High Abilities) by Víctor García León, a film exploring the dynamics of parent groups in schools. Other notable titles include ‘Pioneras,’ a historical drama about the first women’s football team in Spain during the 1970s, and ‘Después de Kim’ (After Kim) by Ángeles González-Sinde, which delves into fractured family relationships. A new version of ‘Mi querida señorita’ (My Dear Miss), directed by Fernando González Molina and produced by Los Javis, is also set to premiere.

The festival also champions emerging filmmakers with titles like ‘Corredora’ (Runner) by Laura García Alonso, ‘Mala bestia’ (Awful Beast) by Bàrbara Farré, and ‘Iván y Hadoum’ by Ian de la Rosa, which recently won the Teddy LGTBI Award at the Berlin Film Festival. ‘Yo no moriré de amor’ (I Won’t Die of Love) by Marta Matute and ‘Pizza Movies,’ a comedy by Carlo Padial, round out the diverse selection of new works.

Beyond the Competition: A Look at the Full Slate

The festival’s offerings extend beyond the official competition. Films like ‘9 lunas’ (9 Moons) by Patricia Ortega, ‘A una isla de ti’ (To an Island of You) by Alexis Morante, and ‘Día de caza’ (Hunting Day) by Pedro Aguilera will also be screened. The Cinema Cocina section, a popular feature, returns with its unique blend of film and gastronomy. La Villa del Mar, a space dedicated to industry trends and new technologies, will also be open to both professionals and the public for the second year running.

Stars Align on the Red Carpet

In addition to Carmen Maura, the opening night red carpet is expected to draw Salva Reina, María León, Álvaro Cervantes, Secun de la Rosa, Carlos Bardem, Jorge Sanz, and Sara Sálamo. Joane Camborda, who will preside over the jury this year, is also scheduled to attend. Throughout the festival, attendees can anticipate appearances from prominent figures in Spanish cinema, including Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, the recent Goya Award winner for ‘Los domingos’ (Sundays), Peruvian director Francisco Lombardi, who will receive a retrospective award, and veteran actress Victoria Vera, who will be honored with the Biznaga Ciudad del Paraíso award. Rossy de Palma will also be a featured guest, hosting the Premio Málaga-Diario SUR gala.

What’s Next for the Festival de Málaga?

The festival’s immediate focus is on a successful opening night and a smooth run through its scheduled dates. The coming days will spot a flurry of premieres, Q&A sessions, and industry events. The awarding of the Biznaga de Oro, the festival’s top prize, on March 14th will mark the culmination of this year’s celebration of Spanish cinema. The Teatro Cervantes, a central hub for the festival, will also host a series of musical performances throughout the year, including events as part of the 2025-26 season.
