Man’s 170kg Weight Loss Journey & Ironman Challenge

Man’s 170kg Weight Loss Journey & Ironman Challenge

March 11, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Jakub Chládek, a 33-year-classic logistics dispatcher from Germany, is facing a challenge of immense proportions: completing an Ironman 70.3 race in Hradec Králové. This undertaking, featured on the Czech television program Extrémní proměny (Extreme Makeover), comes after years of battling obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. Currently weighing 170 kilograms (approximately 375 pounds), Jakub’s journey is a last-ditch effort to reclaim his health, his family life, and his future.

A Life Defined by Routine and Indulgence

Jakub’s daily routine, as detailed in the program, is a cycle of long hours at work – planning routes for an international trucking company – coupled with a lengthy commute and a diet heavy in processed foods. His typical day includes a three-hour roundtrip commute fueled by half a liter of energy drinks and sugary soda, alongside frequent indulgences in donuts and sausages. This pattern, his mother Lenka suggests, began in childhood. “He would eat and eat and eat,” she recounts. “When I didn’t want him to eat anymore and tried to correct it, I found out he was eating in secret.”

The cycle of craving and regret is a familiar one for Jakub. He admits to quickly consuming chocolate, nuts, and chips, only to feel unwell afterward, yet repeating the behavior the next day. His mother describes a frustrating dynamic: “Unfortunately, he enjoys it. And the more he enjoys it, the lazier he becomes. He’s used to living in this body, but the body is gaining and gaining weight. He realizes it, but he can’t fight it, even with his wife trying to help. The whole family tells him, but the craving is really strong.”

A Family’s Plea for Change

Jakub’s wife, Lucie, paints a picture of a man who has always struggled with activity. “He was lazy and always liked to lie on the couch. I was the one running around, whether with the kids or around him,” she says. Her concern extends beyond his health, expressing fear that their children will only remember him in his current state. “The kids are growing up and will remember him like this. Kids remember exactly the things they can’t do with you. You didn’t teach them to ride a bike, you didn’t go with them on toy cars, to the fair, on a roller coaster.” Lucie’s emotional plea underscores the urgency of the situation, admitting she feels unable to help him alone.

Jakub himself is acutely aware of the toll his weight is taking. He hasn’t looked in a mirror in five years, and expresses a fear of repeating his father’s fate – a life lived alone and without children. “I don’t want to end up like my dad. I don’t want to be without children, I don’t want to be a divorced man. I want to manage it and find a way to be happy. I have to lose weight to be able to grant all this, and not just die on the couch,” he laments. His self-assessment is stark: “I look like a substantial bag of crap that is incapable of anything, couldn’t change anything, and is to blame himself.”

A Trainer’s Challenge and an Unexpected Goal

Trainer Martin Košťál initiated the intervention by challenging Jakub on his birthday, tasking him with walking half a kilometer. The attempt, though seemingly short, took Jakub six and a half minutes and was made even more difficult by the uphill terrain. Košťál acknowledged the difficulty but emphasized Jakub’s effort. “I didn’t expect Jakub to be in such bad shape. Half a kilometer, six and a half minutes, and it was all downhill. But I mainly saw that Kuba fought,” Košťál stated.

The program has now set an ambitious goal: participation in the Ironman 70.3 Hradec Králové. This event, consisting of a 1.9-kilometer swim, a 90-kilometer bike ride, and a 21.1-kilometer run, represents a monumental challenge even for seasoned athletes. As Jakub himself admits, he’s bracing for the unexpected. The decision to enter him in the race, according to Košťál, is based on a belief that Jakub has been underestimated.

What Does an Ironman 70.3 Entail?

The Ironman 70.3, also known as a half Ironman, is a grueling test of endurance. The swim portion requires navigating open water, often in challenging conditions. The cycling leg demands sustained effort over varied terrain, and the half-marathon run tests both physical and mental fortitude. The Hradec Králové event, scheduled for August 2024, will be a significant undertaking for Jakub, requiring months of dedicated training and a complete lifestyle overhaul.

Beyond the Race: A Fight for Family and Self-Worth

Whereas the Ironman 70.3 serves as a concrete goal, the core of Jakub’s journey is deeply personal. It’s about becoming a more active and engaged father and husband, and regaining a sense of self-respect. The program’s focus on family dynamics highlights the emotional stakes involved, and the potential for lasting change extends far beyond the finish line. The series, as reported by The Forward, aims to document this transformation, offering a raw and honest portrayal of the challenges and triumphs along the way.

The next installment of Extrémní proměny, airing this Wednesday at 8:20 PM, will reveal Jakub’s initial weight loss and the beginning of his training regimen. The program promises to chronicle his progress, the obstacles he faces, and the impact on his relationships. Whether Jakub can successfully complete the Ironman 70.3 remains to be seen, but his commitment to change and the support of his family offer a glimmer of hope for a brighter future.
