Married at First Sight & the Manosphere: How Fringe Views Are Entering the Mainstream

Married at First Sight & the Manosphere: How Fringe Views Are Entering the Mainstream

March 4, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The current season of Married at First Sight is proving to be more than just another round of televised relationship experiments. It’s a stark illustration of how ideologies originating in online spaces – specifically, the “manosphere” – are increasingly permeating mainstream culture, and now, Australian reality television.

A Crash Course in the Manosphere

Emerging in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and gaining significant traction during the Gamergate controversy in 2014, the manosphere is a collection of online subcultures. These include incels (involuntary celibates), pick-up artists, and “men’s rights activists,” all generally characterized by a virulent strain of misogyny. While the specific beliefs vary between groups, a unifying principle is opposition to feminism and a pseudo-scientific adherence to gender essentialism – the idea that gender is innate and dictates distinct traits for men and women.

This worldview posits men as inherently dominant and women as inherently submissive, seeking to confine both genders to limiting and controlling roles. What was once relegated to niche corners of the internet has, in recent years, been amplified by algorithms and controversial figures like Andrew Tate, leading to a wider dissemination of these beliefs. These ideas have found particular resonance with young men, especially in the context of increasing economic precarity, which the manosphere attempts to address with its own set of answers.

A 2024 survey of Australian men aged 16 to 34 revealed a concerning trend: 15% disagreed with the statement “women deserve equal rights to men,” a significant increase from 6% in 2019. This data point underscores the growing acceptance of anti-feminist sentiment within a key demographic.

The Manosphere Infiltrates Australian TV

Married at First Sight (MAFS) consistently ranks among Australia’s most popular reality television programs. The premise – strangers “marrying” upon first meeting, navigating challenges designed to test their compatibility, and deciding whether to stay together at weekly commitment ceremonies – is presented as a “social experiment.” While, the show’s producers have faced criticism for prioritizing drama and ratings over the well-being of its participants.

This season features Tyson Gordon and Stephanie Marshall as one of the featured couples. Both identify as “anti-woke,” but Tyson has drawn particular backlash for his rigid expectations of a partner. He explicitly states he doesn’t want a “feminist who hates men” and expresses disapproval of women with “a high body count” – a phrase frequently used within the manosphere to judge a woman’s worth based on her sexual history, while simultaneously applying a different standard to men.

When Stephanie reveals she’s never been in a relationship, Tyson expresses concern that she might be “too frigid.” Despite Stephanie seemingly fulfilling his stated criteria, he quickly dismisses her, stating he wants someone “submissive and not masculine.” This language, as Stephanie herself points out, is directly attributable to the manosphere.

The Normiefication of Fringe Views

While patriarchal views aren’t new to the MAFS franchise, Tyson’s articulation of them demonstrates a direct influence from the manosphere. Even if he held these beliefs prior to the popularization of figures like Andrew Tate, the manosphere has provided him with the language to express them. This represents the “normiefication” of these fringe views – exposing them to a broader audience without necessarily indicating their acceptance, but contributing to a shift in the Overton window, making previously unacceptable perspectives seem more legitimate.

By framing women who challenge him as “masculine,” Tyson resurfaces regressive tropes that feminism has long fought to dismantle, and which the manosphere actively seeks to revive. This isn’t simply a matter of individual opinion; it’s a reflection of a broader cultural trend.

A Bigger Problem Than MAFS

Channel 9 and the producers of MAFS have an ethical responsibility to protect their participants. The show has previously faced criticism for normalizing behavior associated with intimate partner violence, and it appears lessons haven’t been learned. The pursuit of ratings continues to outweigh concerns for the well-being of those involved.

The mainstreaming of the manosphere extends far beyond MAFS. It’s indicative of a broader political and cultural shift in which misogyny is being reinstated as an ideological norm, facilitated by online platform algorithms and far-right political projects. Combating these narratives is a complex challenge. While improved media literacy is crucial, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. Continued pushback against these beliefs is essential to protect women’s civil and political liberties.
