Metallica & Red Cross: Band’s Fans Donate 65,000+ Blood Donations Worldwide
Metallica’s fanbase has once again demonstrated its power to effect real-world change, contributing to over 25,000 blood donations across the United States through a partnership with the American Red Cross. The initiative, launched in April 2025 as part of the band’s All Within My Hands foundation, has expanded beyond the M72 World Tour’s initial U.S. Dates to become a nationwide effort, tapping into the band’s devoted following to address a critical need.
The collaboration began with blood drives held at select venues during the U.S. Leg of the M72 tour, offering fans a tangible way to give back to their communities whereas experiencing the band’s live performances. The campaign quickly gained momentum, extending to blood drives across the country and ultimately resulting in a significant boost to the national blood supply. According to the American Red Cross, the partnership has collected more than 25,000 donations within the U.S., and approximately 40,000 donations worldwide when including overseas tour stops.
Lars Ulrich, founding member of Metallica, expressed his gratitude for the enthusiastic response from the band’s fans. “A hallmark mission of the All Within My Hands Foundation is to support critical care and communities, encouraging fans and friends to take action,” Ulrich said in a statement. “We’re thrilled the Metallica Family recognizes the importance of blood donation and didn’t hesitate to rally behind this lifesaving effort. The initiative’s success isn’t just measured in numbers. it’s also attracting a new demographic to blood donation. Notably, 16% of participants were first-time blood donors, with nearly half of those new donors falling within the 16-24 age range. This influx of younger donors is particularly encouraging for the American Red Cross, which has observed a broader year-over-year increase in Gen Z blood donors, signaling a growing commitment to civic engagement among this generation.
Darren Irby, executive director for national partnerships at the American Red Cross, highlighted the impact of the Metallica partnership. “What Metallica and their fans have accomplished this year is truly monumental – inspiring people to give blood for the first time while also energizing teens and young adults about the donation process,” Irby stated. The need for blood donations remains constant, with someone in the U.S. Requiring a blood transfusion every two seconds, and the Red Cross relies entirely on volunteer donors to meet this demand.
To further incentivize participation, donors who contributed between , and , and registered their donation, received a limited-edition T-shirt. They were also entered into a sweepstakes to win an ESP Snakebyte guitar, custom-designed by artist Squindo and autographed by all members of Metallica.
