The National Weather Service confirmed at least one tornado near Union City, Michigan, and investigated reports of others. Part of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Union City sustained damage, though remarkably, its nearly 150-year-old grand piano was spared, according to a Facebook post from the church.

Unusual Conditions Fuel Severe Weather

Meteorologists attribute the outbreak to a combination of factors, including a weather system drawing moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and a warm front moving north. This created conditions conducive to tornado formation in a state where they are relatively uncommon. David Roth, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland, noted that Michigan typically experiences an average of 15 tornadoes annually, significantly less than states like Texas (155) and Kansas (96).

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported that a 47-year-old woman and her 13-year-old daughter were found dead in a vehicle near Fairview, with the crash believed to be tornado-related, according to spokesperson Sarah Stewart.

The severe weather wasn’t limited to Michigan and Oklahoma. More than 7 million Americans were under the highest risk of severe weather on Friday, encompassing areas including Kansas City, Missouri. Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Omaha, Nebraska. An additional 25 million people faced a slightly lesser risk across a broader zone including Dallas, Oklahoma City, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The National Weather Service warned of scattered thunderstorms across the Plains states, Ozarks, and Midwest.

The storms arrived near the beginning of what is often referred to as “tornado season,” which varies in timing across the United States. Experts recommend having a weather radio and a pre-determined shelter plan in place before severe weather strikes.

While conditions eased in parts of the Northeast on Friday, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut remained under weather advisories. Simultaneously, the southern U.S. Is bracing for unusually warm temperatures, with forecasts predicting temperatures 20-30 degrees above average, potentially reaching the 80s as far north as the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic. The National Weather Service in Norman, Oklahoma, plans to conduct damage surveys to confirm whether Thursday night’s storms were indeed tornadoes.
