Motörhead Guitarist Phil Campbell Dies Aged 64

Motörhead Guitarist Phil Campbell Dies Aged 64

March 14, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Phil Campbell, the longtime guitarist for Motörhead, has died at the age of 64. The news was announced by Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons, the band featuring Campbell and his sons Todd, Dane, and Tyla.

According to a statement released by the band, Campbell passed away peacefully last night following a long and courageous battle in intensive care after a complex major operation. He is remembered as a devoted husband, a wonderful father, and a proud grandfather, affectionately known as “Bampi.”

“He was deeply loved by all who knew him and will be missed immensely. His legacy, music and the memories he created with so many will live on forever,” the statement continued. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.

Motörhead’s official Facebook page also paid tribute, expressing disbelief at the loss. The post highlighted Campbell’s 31-year tenure with Motörhead, making him the longest-serving member alongside Lemmy Kilmister. Following Lemmy’s death in 2015, Campbell formed Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons, continuing to record and tour with his sons.

The Facebook post described Campbell as a “wonderful guitarist, writer, performer, and musician who had Motörhead in his veins.” It also emphasized his sense of humor and joy for life, adding, “You could not be around him without a chuckle or twenty.”

Born in Pontypridd, Wales, in 1961, Campbell joined Motörhead in 1984, replacing Brian Robertson. He quickly became an integral part of the band’s sound, contributing to 16 studio albums, including their final release, 2015’s Awful Magic. After the departure of Wurzel in 1995, Campbell became the band’s sole guitarist.

Campbell’s musical journey began earlier, influenced by guitarists like Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page, and Jimi Hendrix. He recalled seeing Hawkwind with Lemmy on bass and vocals at age 12, even asking for Lemmy’s autograph – a foreshadowing of their future collaboration. He played in several local bands, including Contrast, Rocktopus, and Persian Risk, before joining Motörhead.

The audition process for Motörhead in 1984 was notable, with Lemmy unable to choose between Campbell and Michael ‘Würzel’ Burston, ultimately hiring both. They debuted together on the 1984 compilation No Remorse, co-writing and performing on four new songs.

Following Motörhead’s disbandment after Lemmy’s passing, Campbell formed Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons, releasing an EP and four albums, most recently 2023’s Kings Of The Abyss. He also released a solo album, Classic Lions Still Roar, in 2019.

In a 2023 interview with Classic Rock, Campbell spoke about the formation of The Bastard Sons, explaining that it began with a jam session at his son’s 30th birthday party. He had initially considered retirement after Motörhead’s end but found renewed purpose in playing with his sons.

The Bastard Sons recently cancelled a tour of Australia in February 2026 due to “medical advice” received regarding Campbell’s health. The band expressed their apologies and prioritized his well-being.

Motörhead drummer Mikkey Dee shared his grief, describing Campbell as “the funniest guy” he had ever known and “the best rock guitar player” he had ever played with. He praised Campbell’s talent, humor, and the joy he brought to life, expressing his sorrow at the loss of a “rock soldier.”

Doro Pesch also paid tribute, stating, “I’m at a loss for words. This is so sad… Phil, it was an honor to call you a friend. We will never forget you! Rest in peace!”

Campbell’s contributions to hard rock and metal are undeniable. His powerful guitar playing and long-standing membership in Motörhead cemented his place in music history. He leaves behind a legacy of influential music and cherished memories for fans worldwide.
