Netflix’s One Piece: Will It Reach 12 Seasons? | Future of the Live-Action Series

Netflix’s One Piece: Will It Reach 12 Seasons? | Future of the Live-Action Series

Netflix

The ambition behind Netflix’s live-action adaptation of “One Piece” is once again under discussion, as comments from producers regarding a potential twelve-season run have resurfaced following the release of the show’s second season. Initial hopes for the series, which premiered in 2023, were remarkably high, with executive producer Marty Adelstein telling Deadline that the team was “hoping for 12 seasons” given the sheer volume of source material.

Mapping the Grand Line: A Twelve-Season Vision

Adelstein’s comments weren’t made in isolation. Fellow executive producer Becky Clements elaborated on the scope, noting that the manga, currently exceeding 1,080 chapters, offered ample material. She suggested that even six seasons might only cover half of the existing story, implying a truly expansive narrative potential. “We have plans with Matt Owens for how we would break multiple seasons, and I think even if we did six seasons, we would probably only use up half of the chapters of the manga. It really could go on and on and on,” Clements stated.

The renewed attention to these statements comes as fans and industry observers alike assess the show’s performance and Netflix’s commitment to a long-term investment. While the second season garnered generally positive reviews, it also sparked debate about the practicalities of sustaining such a lengthy series, considering budgetary constraints, potential cast turnover, and the demands of production.

A Balancing Act for Netflix

The streaming giant faces a complex equation with “One Piece.” As Forbes recently pointed out, the show occupies a unique space: it’s critically acclaimed and popular with audiences, but also expensive to produce. The question becomes whether viewership numbers, while substantial, are high enough to justify the cost of potentially dozens more episodes. It’s a dilemma Netflix has encountered before, but rarely with a series carrying such ambitious long-term plans.

The show’s second season experienced a relatively small viewership drop of just 9% compared to its debut, a positive sign for its continued appeal. However, it didn’t reach the #1 spot in the US top 10, despite topping charts globally and in many individual countries. This nuance highlights the show’s success as a major, but not quite “Stranger Things” or “Squid Game”-level, hit for the streamer.

Oda’s Vision and the Time Skip

Adding another layer to the conversation is a recent revelation from Mackenyu, the actor portraying Roronoa Zoro. He shared that Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the original “One Piece” manga, has a specific endpoint in mind for the live-action series. This endpoint reportedly aligns with a major turning point in the story – a significant time skip – often considered the halfway mark of the overall narrative. This suggests that the producers aren’t simply improvising, but are working towards a destination dictated by the source material’s author.

Production Momentum and the Road Ahead

Despite the questions surrounding the overall season count, production on a third season is already well underway. Filming began several months ago, suggesting a potentially quicker turnaround than the gap between seasons one, and two. A mid-to-late 2027 release is currently the most likely timeframe, effectively halving the wait for fans eager to continue the adventure.

The initial enthusiasm for a twelve-season arc, while ambitious, now feels tempered by the realities of streaming economics and the complexities of long-form television production. The show’s continued success, coupled with Oda’s involvement, certainly strengthens its position, but the path to a full twelve-season run remains far from certain.

Looking Ahead: Season Three and Beyond

For now, fans can focus on the upcoming third season and the promise of further adaptation of the beloved manga. The accelerated production timeline suggests Netflix is committed to maintaining momentum, and the creative team appears to be navigating the challenges of bringing Oda’s expansive world to life. Whether that journey ultimately spans twelve seasons remains an open question, but the current trajectory indicates a continued voyage for the live-action “One Piece.”
