Nicholas Brendon Dies: ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Star Was 54

March 21, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Nicholas Brendon, the actor best known for his role as Xander Harris on the beloved WB series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 54. His family confirmed that he passed away in his sleep on Friday, March 20, 2026, due to natural causes.

Brendon’s portrayal of Xander Harris, Buffy’s loyal and often comedic best friend, resonated with audiences throughout the show’s seven-season run, from 1997 to 2003. He provided a grounded, relatable perspective amidst the supernatural battles and complex mythology that defined the series. The role earned him a dedicated following and established him as a familiar face in genre television.

“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” his family said in a statement released on his official Facebook page. “He passed in his sleep of natural causes. Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart.”

Beyond Buffy, Brendon continued to work in television, notably appearing in multiple episodes of Criminal Minds as Kevin Lynch, an FBI technical analyst. He received Saturn Award nominations in 1998, 1999, and 2000 for his work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, recognizing the impact of his performance within the genre television landscape.

In recent years, Brendon had increasingly focused on painting and art, finding a new creative outlet. “Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art,” the statement from his family continued. “Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.”

While celebrated for his on-screen work, Brendon publicly battled personal challenges for many years. His family acknowledged these struggles, noting that he was “on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis, and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing.” He voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility in 2004 to address an alcohol problem, and faced further challenges in 2010, requiring another stint in rehab following an encounter with law enforcement.

More recently, Brendon faced a series of health issues. In February 2021, he underwent emergency surgery following a fall and subsequent spinal injury. A complication during a second spinal surgery in October 2021 led to tachycardia, an abnormal heart rhythm. Following a cardiac incident in August 2022, he was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and was under the care of a cardiologist.

News of Brendon’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from his former colleagues and fans. Allyson Hannigan, who played Willow Rosenberg on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, writing, “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I love you. RIP.”

Brendon’s passing serves as a reminder of the complexities faced by those in the public eye, and the often-hidden battles fought alongside professional success. He leaves behind a legacy as a beloved character actor who brought humor, heart, and a relatable humanity to the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and will be deeply missed by those who knew and admired his work.

His representative, Rebecca Taylor, asked for privacy for the family during this tough time.
