Nicholas Brendon Dies: ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Star Was 54
Nicholas Brendon, the actor celebrated for his portrayal of Xander Harris on all seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died. He was 54 years classic. The news was confirmed Friday by his family, who shared a statement with The Hollywood Reporter.
“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” the statement read. “He passed in his sleep of natural causes. Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was. While it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing. Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support.”
Beyond Sunnydale: A Career Spanning Genres
While Buffy the Vampire Slayer remains the role for which Brendon is most widely recognized, his career encompassed a diverse range of projects. He appeared in films like Demon Island and Unholy during breaks in the show’s run, and later took on a recurring role in the procedural drama Criminal Minds as Kevin Lynch. Brendon as well starred alongside Lauren Ambrose and a then-rising Amy Adams in the 2000 Sundance Film Festival entry, Psycho Beach Party, a cult favorite adaptation of Charles Busch’s off-Broadway play. Psycho Beach Party is remembered for its campy humor and affectionate parody of 1960s beach movies.
He also had a brief but notable turn in television comedy, starring in the Fox sitcom Kitchen Confidential (2005), based on Anthony Bourdain’s memoir, alongside Bradley Cooper.
Early Aspirations and a Voice for Others
Born Nicholas Brendon Schultz in Los Angeles in 1971, he shared a birthday – April 12th – with his identical twin brother, Kelly Donovan, arriving just three minutes after him. Originally, Brendon harbored ambitions of a professional baseball career, but ultimately turned to acting, in part as a way to address a childhood stutter. He later became a spokesperson for the Stuttering Foundation of America, using his platform to advocate for others with speech impediments. The Stuttering Foundation of America continues to provide resources and support for individuals who stutter.
Public Struggles and Recent Health Challenges
In recent years, Brendon faced significant personal challenges, including struggles with substance abuse and mental health. These struggles became public through multiple arrests and legal issues beginning in 2010, involving charges ranging from vandalism to felony domestic violence. He openly discussed his battles with alcohol and mental health on an episode of Dr. Phil, and frequently issued apologies for his actions.
Adding to these challenges, Brendon revealed in 2023 that he had suffered a heart attack and been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect, as well as cauda equina syndrome, requiring several spinal surgeries. Despite these health setbacks, his family’s statement emphasized his optimism and commitment to treatment in the time leading up to his death.
A Twinship On and Off Screen
Brendon’s relationship with his identical twin brother, Kelly Donovan, was a unique aspect of his life and career. While Donovan did not pursue acting with the same intensity, the two appeared together in two episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Notably, in the 2000 episode “The Replacement,” the character of Xander Harris was temporarily split into two versions – one embodying his positive qualities (played by Donovan) and the other representing his flaws (played by Brendon).
What Remains
Those close to Brendon reportedly felt encouraged by his recent outlook and progress. His family has requested privacy as they mourn his loss and celebrate his life. The entertainment community, and particularly the devoted fanbase of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is grappling with the news of his passing, remembering a performer who brought humor, heart, and a relatable vulnerability to the role of Xander Harris.
As of this writing, details regarding memorial arrangements have not been announced.
