Noah Kahan Defends Chappell Roan Against Paparazzi & Autograph Resellers

Noah Kahan Defends Chappell Roan Against Paparazzi & Autograph Resellers

March 10, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Noah Kahan has publicly backed Chappell Roan after the “Pink Pony Club” singer detailed a frustrating encounter with aggressive fans and autograph seekers while attempting to have dinner in Paris. The incident, which Roan documented on her phone, quickly went viral, sparking a debate about celebrity boundaries and the motivations of those seeking autographs.

Kahan didn’t mince words in his defense of Roan, calling the autograph resellers “scummy, manipulative, [and] parasitic” in a series of posts on his Instagram Story. He as well directed pointed criticism at those who present themselves as fans but are, in his view, simply looking to profit from an artist’s signature. The exchange highlights a growing tension between artists and individuals who treat encounters as transactional opportunities, rather than genuine moments of connection.

The Paris Incident: A Viral Moment

Roan’s video, captured by both herself and a bystander, shows her confronting a group of people clamoring for her attention outside a Paris restaurant during Paris Fashion Week. She repeatedly asks them to supply her space, explaining that she simply wants to have dinner. In the video, Roan points out one individual who repeatedly ignored her requests and hid their face when filmed. “I’m being disregarded as a human,” she says in the clip. “I’m just trying to go to dinner, and I’ve asked these people several times to get away from me… These are all the people that are completely disregarding my boundaries.”

While Roan has not yet publicly shared the video she took, the bystander’s footage quickly circulated online, prompting a wave of support for the singer. The incident is the latest in a series of similar encounters Roan has experienced, leading her to speak out against what she describes as disrespectful paparazzi culture.

Kahan’s Strong Response: Beyond Paparazzi

Kahan’s response went beyond simply condemning the paparazzi, a common target of criticism in these situations. He specifically called out “scalpers” – individuals who seek autographs not for personal enjoyment, but to resell them for profit. “Also those dudes saying ‘I’m a huge fan’ following her around are scalpers and are as disappointing as the paparazzi. Fuck em all,” he wrote on Instagram. He elaborated in a follow-up video, explaining that these individuals often go to extreme lengths to track down celebrities, discovering their accommodations, travel plans, and even the whereabouts of their families and teams.

“They just sit outside places and try to guilt you into signing shit so they can sell it,” Kahan explained. “And they trick people like you who are just watching the video… into thinking that someone’s being rude to one of their fans when they’re really just like manipulating you.” He concluded with a forceful condemnation: “They’re scummy, they’re manipulative, they’re parasitic — fuck ’em. Seriously, fuck them.”

The Autograph Resale Market: A Growing Concern

Kahan’s comments shed light on a less-discussed aspect of celebrity encounters: the thriving market for autographed memorabilia. While collecting autographs has long been a hobby for fans, the rise of online marketplaces and auction sites has transformed it into a lucrative business. Autographs from popular artists like Roan and Kahan can fetch significant prices, incentivizing individuals to aggressively pursue signatures, often disregarding the artist’s boundaries. Yahoo Entertainment reported on the incident, highlighting the growing frustration among artists.

Roan and Kahan: A History of Mutual Support

This isn’t the first time Kahan has publicly supported Roan. The two artists have demonstrated a mutual appreciation for each other’s work, and Kahan has previously used his platform to amplify Roan’s voice. This latest display of solidarity underscores a growing sense of community among artists who are pushing back against exploitative practices within the entertainment industry. The pair were also photographed together at a Republic Records event in January 2024, as seen in images published by Yahoo Entertainment.

A Divided Response: Fans and Boundaries

The incident and Kahan’s response have ignited a debate on social media, with opinions sharply divided. Some argue that celebrities, by virtue of their fame, should expect a certain level of attention and intrusion. Others maintain that artists have a right to privacy and should be able to move about freely without being harassed. This debate reflects a broader conversation about the boundaries between public figures and their fans, and the responsibilities that come with both fame and fandom. Holler Country covered the initial fallout from the incident.

What’s Next for Roan and Kahan?

Chappell Roan is currently performing shows in support of her album, Pink Pony Club, and is scheduled to continue touring throughout 2026. While she hasn’t commented directly on Kahan’s statement, her initial video suggests she intends to continue advocating for respectful treatment. Kahan is also actively touring and promoting his own music. Both artists are likely to remain vocal about the challenges they face as public figures, and their willingness to speak out could encourage other artists to do the same. A potential collaboration between the two artists, given their demonstrated support for one another, isn’t out of the question, though no such plans have been announced.

The incident also raises questions about potential security measures for artists at public events and the role of event organizers in protecting their boundaries. It remains to be seen whether this will lead to any concrete changes in how celebrities are approached and protected, but the conversation sparked by Roan and Kahan’s experiences is a crucial first step.
