Noma’s LA Pop-Up Faces Protests & Redzepi Steps Back Amid Abuse Allegations

Noma’s LA Pop-Up Faces Protests & Redzepi Steps Back Amid Abuse Allegations

March 12, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Chef René Redzepi, the culinary force behind the internationally acclaimed Noma restaurant, has stepped away from the Copenhagen-based establishment and resigned from MAD, the community-building nonprofit he founded. The move follows a surge of resurfaced allegations detailing abusive behavior within Noma’s kitchens and a protest held Wednesday outside the restaurant’s Los Angeles pop-up.

The announcement, delivered via Instagram stories, marks a dramatic turn for Redzepi and Noma, a restaurant consistently ranked among the world’s best. For over two decades, Noma has been synonymous with New Nordic cuisine, pioneering a foraging-focused, hyper-seasonal approach that influenced chefs globally. But the legacy is now deeply shadowed by accusations of a toxic work environment.

From Acclaim to Allegations: A Five-Day Shift

The current crisis unfolded rapidly over the past five days, sparked by a New York Times report published Saturday detailing allegations of abuse spanning 2009 to 2017. The report included accounts of physical and verbal abuse, intimidation, and threats of retaliation against Noma staff. Redzepi responded with a public apology on Saturday, but the response did little to quell the growing outcry. As the New York Times reported, the allegations prompted immediate and visible repercussions.

Despite the mounting pressure, representatives for Noma initially stated on Monday that the highly anticipated, and expensive ($1,500 per seat), Los Angeles pop-up would proceed as planned. However, that stance quickly crumbled as key sponsors began to withdraw their support on Tuesday, offering refunds to customers. The pop-up, announced last summer, was intended to be a showcase of Noma’s innovative cuisine and a celebration of Californian ingredients. The Los Angeles Times detailed the sponsor exodus and the growing discontent surrounding the event.

Wednesday saw a small but vocal protest outside the Paramour Estate in Silver Lake, where Noma L.A. Officially launched. Protesters, including former Noma staff member Jason Ignacio White, who initially brought the allegations to light via Instagram last month, carried signs demanding accountability and higher wages for restaurant workers. White, along with the worker advocacy nonprofit One Fair Wage, read an open letter to Redzepi, calling for reparations and a response within 24 hours.

A Legacy Under Scrutiny

Redzepi co-founded Noma in 2003, quickly establishing it as a culinary destination. The restaurant earned three Michelin stars and consistently topped “World’s Best Restaurant” lists, solidifying Redzepi’s reputation as a visionary chef. Noma’s influence extended beyond the kitchen, inspiring a generation of chefs to embrace local, seasonal ingredients and innovative techniques. Food & Wine highlights the significant impact Redzepi and Noma have had on the culinary world.

Alongside Noma, Redzepi founded MAD, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering community and celebrating food culture. MAD has hosted symposia, funded culinary projects, and provided a platform for chefs and food thinkers from around the world. His departure from both Noma and MAD signals a significant shift, not only for Redzepi himself but for the broader culinary landscape.

The Pop-Up and Its Discontents

The Noma L.A. Pop-up, intended to run for 16 weeks, became a focal point for the controversy. The high price point of $1,500 per seat drew criticism even before the abuse allegations surfaced, with some questioning the exclusivity and accessibility of the dining experience. The allegations amplified those concerns, prompting calls for a boycott and raising questions about the ethics of supporting a restaurant with a history of alleged abuse.

Despite the protests and sponsor withdrawals, some diners chose to proceed with their reservations, citing a desire to support the current Noma team and experience the restaurant’s cuisine. One diner, speaking anonymously to the Los Angeles Times, acknowledged the allegations but argued that the current staff should not be penalized for the actions of the past. This sentiment underscores the complex ethical considerations at play.

What’s Next for Noma?

Redzepi’s statement on Wednesday emphasized his confidence in the current Noma team, stating that they are “the strongest and most inspiring it has ever been.” He expressed his belief that the team will continue to thrive and deliver a “truly special” experience at the L.A. Pop-up. However, it remains unclear whether Redzepi will retain any ownership stake in Noma or what his future involvement with the restaurant will be. A representative for Noma did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding his ownership status.

The future of MAD is likewise uncertain. The organization has not yet released a statement addressing Redzepi’s resignation or its plans for the future. The allegations and Redzepi’s departure raise fundamental questions about the organization’s mission and its commitment to ethical practices within the food industry.

The Noma L.A. Pop-up is scheduled to continue, but its long-term viability remains in question. The loss of sponsors and the ongoing protests could significantly impact attendance, and revenue. The situation serves as a stark reminder of the power of accountability and the importance of creating safe and respectful workplaces within the hospitality industry.
