Paul Ehrlich’s Wrong Predictions: How ‘The Population Bomb’ Failed—and Why It Mattered
Paul Ehrlich, the biologist whose 1968 book The Population Bomb ignited global fears of mass starvation, died last week at the age of 93. While his predictions proved spectacularly wrong – the world didn’t experience the widespread famine he forecast – his influence on environmental policy and public discourse remains undeniable. The book sold over 2 million copies and earned Ehrlich frequent appearances on television, including more than 20 visits with Johnny Carson on The Tonight Demonstrate, a platform rarely afforded to academics even then.
Ehrlich’s alarmist message, delivered with charisma and urgency, resonated deeply in a period of rapid population growth and Cold War anxieties. He warned that hundreds of millions would starve in the 1970s, a claim he reiterated on Carson’s show, reaching a massive audience. But the “population bomb” never detonated. Instead, global food production surged, and rates of hunger declined precipitously. So why did so many believe him, and why did his warnings hold such sway for so long?
The Moment and the Message
The Population Bomb arrived at a specific cultural moment. The 1960s were marked by a growing awareness of environmental issues, spurred by Rachel Carson’s 1962 book Silent Spring, which exposed the dangers of pesticides. This created a receptive audience for Ehrlich’s warnings about the planet’s limited resources and the potential for ecological collapse. The book’s opening lines – “The battle to feed all of humanity is over. In the 1970s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now” – were stark and unforgettable. They tapped into a deep-seated fear of scarcity and a sense of impending doom.
Ehrlich’s predictions weren’t limited to broad strokes. He specifically forecasted that 65 million Americans would die of famine between 1980 and 1989, and that India, then home to nearly 600 million people, could never support 200 million more. He even predicted a drastic decline in life expectancy in the US and the extinction of all important animal life in the sea within a decade. Each of these forecasts proved demonstrably false. India’s population has nearly tripled since 1970, yet hunger has fallen, and the country is now a major agricultural exporter. Agricultural exports from India reached record highs in 2023.
The Line That Didn’t Go Up
A key flaw in Ehrlich’s analysis was his assumption of a linear trajectory for population growth. The 1960s saw some of the steepest population increases in history, leading him to believe this trend would continue indefinitely. However, he overlooked the demographic transition already underway in developed nations – declining fertility rates linked to urbanization, education, and improved healthcare. These trends eventually spread to the developing world, leading to a global fertility rate of around 2.3 children per woman today, barely above the replacement rate.
But perhaps the most significant factor Ehrlich underestimated was human ingenuity. He failed to account for the potential of agricultural innovation to increase food production. Norman Borlaug, the “father of the Green Revolution,” developed high-yielding wheat varieties that dramatically increased crop yields in countries like Mexico, India, and Pakistan. Borlaug was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his function, which is credited with saving millions of lives. Ehrlich’s worldview, which saw population as “the cancer” that needed to be “cut out,” contrasted sharply with Borlaug’s belief in the power of human innovation to overcome challenges.
The Simon-Ehrlich Bet
This fundamental disagreement led to one of the most famous wagers in academic history. In 1980, economist Julian Simon challenged Ehrlich to a bet: Simon argued that commodity prices would fall over time, reflecting increased resource availability due to human ingenuity. Ehrlich, convinced of impending scarcity, accepted the challenge. They chose five metals – chromium, copper, nickel, tin, and tungsten – and tracked their prices for ten years.
The result? Ehrlich lost. All five metals fell in price, adjusted for inflation. Simon collected $576.07 from Ehrlich in 1990. The bet underscored a crucial point: human innovation can often outpace population growth, leading to increased abundance rather than scarcity.
The Consequences of Alarmism
Ehrlich’s influence extended beyond academic circles. His warnings influenced policymakers in the US and abroad, contributing to coercive family-planning policies in countries like India and China. India’s forced sterilization campaigns during the 1970s and China’s one-child policy were, in part, fueled by fears of overpopulation. These policies had devastating consequences for millions of people. Ehrlich even endorsed cutting off food aid to countries he deemed hopeless.
The enduring appeal of doomsaying, as Ehrlich demonstrated, lies in its ability to tap into our innate negativity bias. Humans are wired to pay more attention to negative information, making alarmist predictions more compelling than optimistic ones. There’s a structural incentive to predict disaster: being wrong is often forgiven, while being right is celebrated. Ehrlich himself, even after decades of being proven wrong, continued to double down on his apocalyptic predictions, telling 60 Minutes in 2023 that “the next few decades will be the end of the kind of civilization we’re used to.”
Looking Ahead: Agency Over Apocalypse
The legacy of Paul Ehrlich isn’t simply a cautionary tale about failed predictions. It’s a reminder that assuming doom can lead to harmful policies. While environmental challenges like climate change and biodiversity loss are real and urgent, a focus on human agency and innovation is essential.
