Peaky Blinders: Creator Reveals Why Arthur Shelby Is Missing From New Film

Peaky Blinders: Creator Reveals Why Arthur Shelby Is Missing From New Film

March 25, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The return of Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man comes with a notable absence: Arthur Shelby, played by Paul Anderson, does not appear in the new film. Creator Steven Knight has explained the decision, revealing a dark turn in the narrative that necessitated the character’s removal from the story. The film, currently gaining traction on Netflix, stars Cillian Murphy alongside Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, and Barry Keoghan, and as well features returning cast members Sophie Rundle and Stephen Graham.

A Story-Driven Absence

Knight explained to The Hollywood Reporter that the storyline dictated Arthur’s fate. According to the narrative, Arthur was strangled by Tommy after a betrayal stemming from his ongoing struggles with opium addiction. This act, Knight stated, was crucial to establishing the weight of Tommy Shelby’s choices and the consequences he carries. “What I will say is that the story determines the cast, and the story was already defined,” Knight said. “I knew that Tommy had to have done something he couldn’t forgive himself for. That’s why the plot took that turn. But as for Paul, I’ll just say he’s a fantastic actor.”

The film presents this backstory through a retrospective sequence, though the character is not portrayed by Anderson and his face remains obscured. This creative choice has sparked debate among viewers, with some finding the scene disconnected from the overall flow of the film.

Paul Anderson’s Recent Challenges

Anderson’s participation in The Immortal Man was already subject to speculation following legal troubles in early 2024. In January of that year, he pleaded guilty to possession of illegal substances in a British court. Reports indicated police responded to a call regarding drug utilize in a restroom, leading to Anderson’s arrest and the discovery of crack cocaine, amphetamines, and prescription medication.

His defense argued that he hadn’t consumed the substances on the premises. Shortly after, Anderson addressed concerns about his health on social media, posting a photo from a London film set and thanking fans for their support, attributing his absence to a bout of the flu. The BBC reported on the initial trailer release and the addition of Barry Keoghan as Duke, Tommy Shelby’s son.

Peaky Blinders: From Series to Film

The Peaky Blinders saga began as a critically acclaimed television series on the BBC, debuting in 2013. The reveal, set in post-World War I Birmingham, England, follows the ruthless rise of the Shelby crime family, led by the formidable Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy). The series quickly gained a devoted following for its compelling characters, atmospheric visuals, and intricate plotting. Netflix hosts the original series, showcasing its six seasons and numerous accolades.

The transition to a feature film, The Immortal Man, was announced following the conclusion of the sixth season. The film picks up the story in 1940, amidst the backdrop of World War II, with Tommy Shelby drawn back into a world of danger and intrigue. The narrative explores themes of legacy, redemption, and the enduring consequences of past actions. The film’s official synopsis, as detailed on Netflix’s website, highlights Tommy’s struggle to save his family and nation from a Nazi plot.

Expanding the Shelby Universe

The cast of The Immortal Man includes both familiar faces and new additions. Rebecca Ferguson joins the ensemble as a mysterious character named Kaulo, although Tim Roth reprises his role as Alfie Solomons. Barry Keoghan’s portrayal of Duke Shelby adds a new dynamic to the family’s complex relationships. The film aims to expand upon the established world of Peaky Blinders, delving deeper into the motivations and vulnerabilities of its characters.

The film’s release comes after a period of anticipation for fans of the series. The original show garnered numerous awards and nominations, including a BAFTA for Best Drama Series. Cillian Murphy’s performance as Tommy Shelby has been widely praised, culminating in recent Oscar and BAFTA wins for his role in Oppenheimer.

What’s Next for the Peaky Blinders Franchise?

While The Immortal Man marks a new chapter for the Peaky Blinders story, the future of the franchise remains open. Steven Knight has previously expressed interest in exploring spin-off series and further expanding the universe beyond Tommy Shelby’s narrative. The success of the film will likely play a crucial role in determining the direction of future projects. Currently, Netflix is evaluating the film’s performance and audience reception to inform potential sequels or related content. The studio has not yet announced any concrete plans, but the enduring popularity of the Peaky Blinders brand suggests that this is far from the last audiences will witness of the Shelby family.
