Peter Jackson to Get Honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes 2024

March 5, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Peter Jackson, the Oscar-winning director best known for bringing J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth to the massive screen with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, will receive an honorary Palme d’Or at the 79th Cannes Film Festival. The announcement, made on Thursday, March 5, 2026, recognizes Jackson’s significant contribution to cinema, blending blockbuster filmmaking with a distinctive artistic vision and technological innovation.

The honorary award will be presented during the opening ceremony of the festival, which runs from May 12 to May 23. Jackson joins a distinguished group of past recipients including Agnès Varda, Marco Bellocchio, Jodie Foster, Meryl Streep, and Robert De Niro, who received the honor last year.

“To be honoured with an Honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes is one of the greatest privileges of my career,” Jackson said in a statement. “Cannes has been a meaningful part of my filmmaking journey. In 1988, I attended the Festival Marketplace with my first movie, Bad Taste, then in 2001 we screened a preview sequence from The Fellowship of the Ring, both of which were important milestones in my career. This festival has always celebrated bold, visionary cinema, and I’m incredibly grateful to the Festival de Cannes for being recognised among the filmmakers and the artists whose work continues to inspire me.”

The festival highlighted a pivotal moment in Jackson’s career that unfolded on the Croisette in May 2001. During the 54th Festival de Cannes, with Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! having opened the festival and Nanni Moretti poised to receive the Palme d’Or for The Son’s Room, Jackson presented 26 minutes of footage from The Fellowship of the Ring. The screening, held seven months before the film’s worldwide release, initially met with some skepticism, but quickly garnered enthusiastic support, marking the beginning of the saga’s sweeping success.

Jackson’s journey to Cannes began much earlier, with his first film, the low-budget horror comedy Bad Taste. Attending the festival marketplace in 1988 with the film represented an early step in his career. Yet, it was the 2001 preview of The Fellowship of the Ring that truly cemented his relationship with the festival and, arguably, launched him into the stratosphere of Hollywood filmmaking.

The impact of that 2001 screening is difficult to overstate. At a time when large-scale fantasy epics were considered risky propositions, the footage showcased a level of visual ambition and storytelling scope that captivated audiences and industry insiders alike. The positive reception provided crucial momentum for the film’s release and paved the way for the subsequent installments, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, which collectively garnered 17 Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Picture for Jackson himself with The Return of the King.

Beyond the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Jackson has demonstrated a diverse range of filmmaking interests. He has tackled historical dramas, monster movies (with King Kong), and documentaries, consistently pushing the boundaries of cinematic technology. His willingness to experiment with new techniques and his commitment to visual storytelling have earned him a reputation as a true auteur.

The honorary Palme d’Or is not merely a recognition of past achievements, but as well a celebration of Jackson’s enduring influence on the art of filmmaking. The festival’s decision to honor him underscores the importance of visionary cinema and the power of storytelling to transport audiences to new worlds. It also acknowledges the director’s unique ability to blend commercial success with artistic integrity, a rare feat in the modern film industry.

While Jackson’s current projects remain largely undisclosed, the honorary award at Cannes serves as a reminder of his remarkable career and his lasting legacy in the world of cinema. The festival’s tribute is a fitting acknowledgement of a filmmaker who has consistently challenged conventions and inspired generations of artists.
