Project Hail Mary Review: Ryan Gosling’s Sci-Fi Epic is a Bright Success

Project Hail Mary Review: Ryan Gosling’s Sci-Fi Epic is a Bright Success

March 10, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The sci-fi landscape is experiencing a surge of optimism and much of that is thanks to ‘Project Hail Mary’, the new film from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. While the premise – a lone astronaut tasked with saving Earth – feels familiar, the execution is anything but, leaning heavily into a surprisingly buoyant tone and a focus on collaborative problem-solving.

The film centers on Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, who awakens with amnesia on a spaceship hurtling through space. He gradually pieces together his mission: to find a solution to a solar energy-devouring phenomenon threatening to plunge Earth into a new ice age. The film doesn’t dwell on the existential dread one might expect from such a scenario. Instead, it quickly pivots to the logistical challenges of the mission, and the unexpected arrival of an ally.

That ally is Rocky, an alien from a distant star system facing the same crisis. Rocky, brought to life through a combination of puppetry and digital effects, is described as “crab-like, made of lumps of stone.” The communication barrier between Grace and Rocky is initially significant, but is cleverly overcome through Grace’s computer, which translates Rocky’s “R2D2-ish burbles” into English, voiced by puppeteer James Ortiz. This interspecies dialogue, the review notes, is far more streamlined than the complex linguistic challenges presented in Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Interstellar’.

What emerges is, essentially, a buddy comedy set against the backdrop of cosmic stakes. The film acknowledges Grace’s lack of personal ties – no family, no romantic attachments – which distinguishes it from the emotionally resonant sacrifices depicted in ‘Interstellar.’ Grace’s relative equanimity in the face of planetary extinction is a deliberate choice, according to the review, and contributes to the film’s overall upbeat energy.

Lord and Miller, the directorial duo known for their work on ‘The Lego Movie’ and ‘21 Jump Street,’ have crafted a film that prioritizes intellectual engagement over relentless action. The review highlights the film’s length – over two and a half hours – and the fact that much of that time is spent with Gosling’s character, immersed in “mind-stretching concepts, painstaking laboratory research and knotty technical puzzles.” Maintaining entertainment value throughout such a conceptually dense narrative is, the review argues, a significant achievement.

The film’s core message, that the fate of humanity may depend not on conflict but on “knowledge, intelligence, communication and collaboration,” is presented as a radical proposition. This emphasis on cooperation, rather than confrontation, is a key element of the film’s optimistic outlook. The review notes that ‘Project Hail Mary’ is already generating Oscar buzz, with some predicting a nomination for Best Picture next year.

The cast includes Ryan Gosling, Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, and Ken Leung. The film is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. While the review doesn’t delve into the specifics of each performance, it underscores the film’s reliance on Gosling as its central figure for a substantial portion of its runtime.

‘Project Hail Mary’ distinguishes itself from other space-faring narratives by embracing a lighter tone and focusing on the power of intellectual curiosity and cross-cultural understanding. It’s a film that suggests that even in the face of existential threats, there’s room for optimism, humor, and the forging of unlikely alliances. The film’s success, both critically and potentially at the awards level, could signal a shift in the genre, prioritizing ingenuity and collaboration over traditional tropes of heroism and conflict. It’s a refreshing take on the end-of-the-world scenario, and a testament to the creative vision of Lord and Miller.

The review awards the film four out of five stars, praising its ability to be both intellectually stimulating and thoroughly entertaining.
