Ready or Not 2: Reviews & Details for the Horror Comedy Sequel

Ready or Not 2: Reviews & Details for the Horror Comedy Sequel

March 15, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The knives are out – and the reviews are in – for “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come,” the follow-up to the 2019 horror-comedy hit. Premiering at South by Southwest (SXSW) this week, the film starring Samara Weaving is tracking slightly below its predecessor with critics, though early reactions suggest it still delivers the bloody, darkly comedic thrills fans expect. The sequel arrives in theaters on March 20th.

Expanding a Twisted World

Directed once again by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (known collectively as Radio Silence), “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” picks up immediately after the events of the first film. Grace MacCaullay (Weaving), having survived the deadly game orchestrated by her new in-laws, finds herself facing an even more daunting challenge. Her victory has triggered a new, global-scale game, where she must contend with the wealthiest and most powerful families on Earth – all vying to kill her or risk losing everything.

The premise, as detailed in the film’s synopsis, raises the stakes considerably. While the first film focused on a single, eccentric family, the sequel expands the scope to a world where Grace’s survival threatens the established order. Joining Weaving are Kathryn Newton, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shawn Hatosy, David Cronenberg, and Elijah Wood, adding considerable star power to the already established franchise. The script is penned by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy, the creative duo behind the original.

Critical Reception: A Slight Dip, But Still Sharp

As of today, March 15th, “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” holds an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 22 reviews. This is a slight decrease from the 89% achieved by the first “Ready or Not” film. On Metacritic, the sequel currently sits at 61/100, also a small step down from the original’s 64/100.

Reviews are largely positive, with many praising Weaving’s performance and the film’s commitment to its signature blend of horror and humor. Glenn Garner of Deadline called it “an action-packed, blood-soaked sequel… paving the way for a trilogy.” Sarah Campbell of Nerdist wrote that the film is “every bit the blood-soaked sequel we wanted.”

Still, some critics note that the sequel doesn’t quite recapture the magic of the original. Samantha Nelson of Polygon acknowledged the film has “incredible moments,” but suggested it lacks the same level of surprise and laughter as its predecessor. Similarly, Harry Stainer of Empire Magazine observed that while Weaving is “endlessly watchable,” the sequel offers “fewer surprises this time around.”

Radio Silence’s Rise and the Appeal of “Ready or Not”

The success of “Ready or Not” in 2019 was a significant turning point for Radio Silence. Prior to that film, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett were known for their work on the V/H/S series and the horror-comedy “Devil’s Due.” “Ready or Not,” with its clever premise and energetic execution, established them as a force to be reckoned with in the horror genre. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the directing duo were confident in the sequel, screening it for press over a month before its release – a sign of their belief in the final product.

The appeal of the “Ready or Not” franchise lies in its subversive take on familiar horror tropes. The premise – a bride forced to participate in a deadly game of hide-and-seek with her wealthy, eccentric in-laws – is both darkly humorous and genuinely terrifying. The films also offer a sharp critique of wealth and privilege, adding a layer of social commentary to the visceral thrills. Samara Weaving’s performance as Grace has been central to the franchise’s success, with critics consistently praising her ability to portray both vulnerability and resilience.

Production Hurdles and a Near Miss

The road to “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” wasn’t without its challenges. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Samara Weaving experienced a back injury just days before filming began, nearly jeopardizing her participation in the project. Fortunately, she was able to recover and continue in her role, ensuring the continuity of the franchise’s central performance.

What’s Next for the Franchise?

With “Ready or Not 2: Here I Come” set to hit theaters on March 20th, the question on many fans’ minds is: what comes next? The film’s ending, which expands the scope of the game to a global level, certainly leaves the door open for a potential third installment. Whether Radio Silence and Searchlight Pictures will pursue a trilogy remains to be seen, but the positive (if slightly diminished) critical reception and the established fanbase suggest that a continuation is certainly possible. The success of the theatrical release will likely be a key factor in determining the future of the franchise.
