René Redzepi Resigns from Noma Amid Abuse Allegations

René Redzepi Resigns from Noma Amid Abuse Allegations

March 12, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

René Redzepi, the celebrated chef and co-founder of Noma, has resigned from the internationally acclaimed Copenhagen restaurant following allegations of physical and psychological abuse levied by dozens of former employees. The announcement, made on March 11, 2026, marks a dramatic fall from grace for the culinary innovator who redefined Nordic cuisine and consistently ranked Noma among the world’s best restaurants.

The resignation comes after a New York Times investigation detailed allegations of a toxic perform environment at Noma, with former staff members recounting instances of physical violence, intimidation, and relentless psychological pressure. The report outlined claims that Redzepi “punched employees in the face, jabbed them with kitchen implements and slammed them against walls,” creating a climate of fear and lasting trauma. The allegations extend beyond physical acts, encompassing body shaming, public ridicule, and threats to employees’ careers and even their families.

Redzepi announced his departure via an Instagram story, stating, “I’ve decided to step away and allow our extraordinary leaders to now guide the restaurant into its next chapter.” He acknowledged the recent scrutiny, stating the past weeks had “brought attention and essential conversations about our restaurant, industry and my past leadership.” He continued, “I have worked to be a better leader and Noma has taken big steps to transform the culture over many years. I recognise these changes do not repair the past. An apology is not enough; I capture responsibility for my own actions.”

The timing of the announcement is particularly fraught, coinciding with Noma’s highly publicized, and fully sold-out, four-month pop-up in Los Angeles. Tickets for the exclusive dining experience, priced at $1,500 per seat, reportedly sold out within three minutes. A minor protest took place outside the L.A. Pop-up on Wednesday, with demonstrators calling for accountability and improved wages for restaurant workers. The opening of the pop-up, which began on Wednesday afternoon, was overshadowed by the resurfaced allegations and the intensifying pressure campaign from former employees.

The initial wave of allegations surfaced last month when a former Noma staff member, Jason Ignacio White, began anonymously posting accounts of abuse on Instagram. This prompted others to reach forward, leading to the New York Times investigation which interviewed 35 former employees. The report detailed a “pattern of physical punishment” and “lasting trauma from layers of psychological abuse, including intimidation, body shaming and public ridicule.” According to the report, Redzepi allegedly threatened to blacklist employees from the industry, deport their families, and even jeopardize family members’ employment at other businesses.

Redzepi’s resignation extends beyond Noma itself. He has also stepped down from the board of MAD, the community-building nonprofit he founded in 2011. He posted a video apology alongside his announcement, further signaling the gravity of the situation and his acceptance of responsibility.

The fallout from the allegations has already begun to impact Noma’s partnerships. Both American Express and Blackbird, a hospitality company, severed ties with the restaurant in the lead-up to the Los Angeles pop-up. This demonstrates the significant commercial repercussions of the accusations, highlighting the growing intolerance for abusive workplace cultures within the high-profile culinary world.

Noma’s legacy is now inextricably linked to these allegations. For years, the restaurant has been lauded as a pioneer of New Nordic cuisine, consistently topping the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. Redzepi himself was celebrated as a visionary chef, influencing a generation of cooks and shaping the global dining landscape. However, the revelations of abuse cast a dark shadow over those achievements, raising fundamental questions about the cost of culinary excellence and the responsibility of leaders to create safe and respectful work environments.

Redzepi expressed confidence in the Noma team’s ability to continue, stating they would “carry forward together into our LA residency, which will be a powerful moment for them to show that they’ve been working toward” a positive change. Whether the restaurant can fully overcome this crisis and rebuild its reputation remains to be seen. The situation serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive issue of abuse within the hospitality industry and the urgent need for systemic change to protect workers and foster a culture of accountability.
