Ronda Rousey’s AEW Status: Not All Elite Despite Revolution Debut & WWE Shock

Ronda Rousey’s AEW Status: Not All Elite Despite Revolution Debut & WWE Shock

March 22, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Ronda Rousey’s surprise appearance at AEW Revolution Sunday, March 15th has sent ripples through the professional wrestling world, but her status with All Elite Wrestling remains, for now, undefined. While Rousey’s confrontation with Toni Storm alongside Marina Shafir certainly made a splash, reports indicate she hasn’t signed a contract with the promotion and is not currently “All Elite.”

The former UFC champion’s arrival in AEW was unexpected, even within the wrestling industry. Sources within WWE reportedly expressed shock at Rousey’s appearance, according to Wrestling Observer Newsletter. This suggests a continued distancing from her previous employer, a sentiment echoed by sources speaking to Fightful Select, who believe Rousey “will do anything she can to go against WWE, UFC, and TKO at this point” and are not anticipating a return to WWE in the near future.

Rousey’s appearance wasn’t simply a cameo. She directly challenged Toni Storm, immediately inserting herself into a storyline with the former AEW Women’s World Champion. However, the reaction from the crowd wasn’t quite what Rousey anticipated, according to Fightful Select. While she received a reaction, it wasn’t the specific response she had expected, suggesting a potential recalibration of her approach within the AEW environment.

The dynamic between Rousey and Shafir is similarly drawing attention. Their history stretches back to their time together in WWE and Ring of Honor, where they formed a notable team. Rousey’s presence at Revolution alongside Shafir, followed by Shafir’s blindside attack on Storm, hints at a possible reunion of the duo, adding another layer of intrigue to the AEW women’s division.

Rousey’s foray into professional wrestling isn’t a full-time commitment, at least not yet. She is scheduled to compete in an MMA bout against Gina Carano on May 16th, 2026, a fight promoted by Most Valuable Promotions (MVP). This suggests her AEW appearance could be part of a broader promotional effort leading up to the MMA fight, or a genuine exploration of a return to professional wrestling.

Rousey’s career has been marked by transitions between different combat sports. She rose to prominence as a dominant force in the UFC before transitioning to WWE, where she held both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championships. Her time with WWE concluded in 2023, but she has remained active in the wrestling world with sporadic appearances, including a Ring of Honor taping with Shafir. Now, her arrival in AEW presents a modern chapter, albeit one that remains open-ended.

The context of Storm and Shafir’s rivalry is also essential. They have clashed numerous times since November, with Revolution marking their tenth encounter. Their feud has been particularly intense, highlighted by Shafir’s controversial tactic of attaching shards of glass to her feet during a Blood & Guts match last year. Storm emerged victorious at Revolution, defeating Shafir after a hard-fought nine-minute contest that included a headbutt and a roll-up pin. The victory, however, was short-lived, as Rousey and Shafir immediately intervened, setting the stage for a potential feud between Rousey and Storm.

While no concrete plans have been announced regarding Rousey’s future in AEW, her appearance at Revolution clearly signals an intent to make an impact. Her presence adds a significant level of star power to the AEW women’s division and creates a compelling narrative thread that will likely unfold in the weeks and months to arrive. The fact that her appearance was relatively easy logistically, being local to Los Angeles, suggests a willingness to be flexible and potentially operate around her other commitments, including the upcoming MMA fight.

The situation is fluid, and Rousey’s long-term intentions remain unclear. However, her arrival in AEW has undoubtedly shaken up the landscape of professional wrestling and generated significant buzz among fans. Whether she becomes a full-time member of the AEW roster or continues to make sporadic appearances, Ronda Rousey’s presence is sure to be felt.
