Ryoji Ikeda: data-cosm [n°1] – Immersive Data Installation at 180 Studios

Ryoji Ikeda: data-cosm [n°1] – Immersive Data Installation at 180 Studios

March 4, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Ryoji Ikeda’s latest immersive installation, data-cosm [n°1], has officially opened at 180 Studios in London, offering a unique sensory experience that transforms complex data into a captivating audiovisual environment. The site-specific work, commissioned by 180 Studios, invites visitors to lie beneath a vast LED ceiling while enveloped in Ikeda’s signature soundscapes, charting data from particle physics to astrophysics.

The installation, which premiered on October 15, 2025, and runs through December 21, 2025, builds upon the foundations laid by Ikeda’s earlier acclaimed project, data-verse. Tickets are currently available through the 180 Studios website.

A Longstanding Collaboration

This isn’t Ikeda’s first foray into immersive installations with 180 Studios and The Vinyl Factory. Their collaboration dates back to the premiere of supersymmetry at Brewer Street Car Park in Soho, London. In 2021, 180 Studios hosted the largest exhibition of Ikeda’s work to date, showcasing large-scale installations and data-driven pieces spanning his career. This history underscores a commitment from both parties to pushing the boundaries of audiovisual art. The Vinyl Factory, known for its work at the intersection of music and visual art, has been instrumental in bringing Ikeda’s vision to life.

Decoding the Data-Driven Art

data-cosm [n°1] is described as a “total sensory encounter,” and that’s precisely what sets it apart. Ikeda’s work isn’t simply about displaying data; it’s about translating it into an emotional and visceral experience. The installation aims to explore the intersection of art and physics on an unprecedented scale, inviting audiences to contemplate the vastness and complexity of the natural world through the lens of data. New Scientist recently recommended Ikeda’s new work, highlighting his pioneering approach to the field.

Ikeda’s Artistic Evolution

Ryoji Ikeda is a Japanese artist renowned for his data-driven installations and performances. His work often focuses on the aesthetics of information, exploring the hidden structures and patterns within data sets. He’s known for his minimalist aesthetic, precise timing, and immersive environments. Before data-cosm [n°1] and data-verse, Ikeda’s career included a diverse range of projects, from live performances to interactive installations, all unified by his fascination with data and its potential for artistic expression. His earlier work often involved manipulating sound and visuals in real-time, creating dynamic and unpredictable experiences.

The evolution from projects like supersymmetry to data-verse and now data-cosm [n°1] demonstrates a deepening exploration of data as both subject and medium. Each project expands on the previous one, refining Ikeda’s techniques and pushing the boundaries of immersive art. The move towards larger-scale installations, as seen in the 2021 exhibition at 180 Studios, suggests a desire to create more encompassing and impactful experiences for audiences.

Why Immersive Art Resonates

The growing popularity of immersive art experiences like data-cosm [n°1] speaks to a broader cultural shift. Audiences are increasingly seeking out experiences that go beyond passive observation, wanting to actively participate and engage with art on a deeper level. This trend is fueled by advancements in technology, which allow artists to create increasingly sophisticated and immersive environments. The desire for these experiences may too be a response to the increasingly digital nature of modern life, with people seeking out opportunities to disconnect from screens and reconnect with their senses.

the intersection of art and science, as explored in data-cosm [n°1], appeals to a growing audience interested in both disciplines. The installation offers a unique opportunity to contemplate complex scientific concepts in a visually and emotionally engaging way. The ability to visualize data, particularly data related to the natural world, can foster a greater understanding and appreciation for the intricacies of the universe.

Extended Runs and Popular Demand

The success of both data-cosm [n°1] and the concurrent exhibition, Paradigm Shift, has led 180 Studios to extend their runs due to popular demand, as reported by FAD Magazine. This indicates a strong public appetite for innovative and immersive art experiences, and solidifies 180 Studios’ position as a leading venue for showcasing cutting-edge work.

Looking Ahead

With data-cosm [n°1] currently captivating audiences, the next step for both Ikeda and 180 Studios involves continuing to explore the possibilities of immersive art. Given their established collaborative relationship, further projects are highly likely. The success of this installation will undoubtedly influence future commissions and exhibitions, potentially leading to even more ambitious and groundbreaking works. The December 21st closing date marks the conclude of this particular chapter, but the conversation around data, art, and immersive experiences is only just beginning.
