Sarah Ferguson Loses York Freedom Title Amid Epstein Links

Sarah Ferguson Loses York Freedom Title Amid Epstein Links

March 27, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The ongoing repercussions of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal continue to reshape the public image of the British Royal Family, with Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, the latest to lose a civic honour. Councillors in the City of York voted unanimously on Thursday evening to strip Ferguson of her Freedom of the City, an honour bestowed upon her in 1987 following her marriage to Prince Andrew.

The decision, reported by the BBC and other outlets, comes amid renewed scrutiny of Ferguson’s relationship with the convicted sex offender, sparked by the recent release of documents related to the Epstein investigation by the US Department of Justice. While Ferguson has not been accused of any wrongdoing, her continued association with Epstein, even after his crimes became public knowledge, proved to be a decisive factor for the York City Council.

Claire Douglas, the Labour leader of the City of York council, articulated the rationale behind the vote. “Honorary Freedom is bestowed only on persons of distinction and those having given eminent services to the City of York,” she stated. “As the people of York would expect, holding this status requires upholding the values and behaviours consistent with such an honour. Those who continued to associate with Epstein after his crimes became widely known fall well short of these expectations.”

This isn’t an isolated incident within the York family. Prince Andrew, Ferguson’s former husband, had his own Freedom of the City revoked in 2022, a move that followed his removal from royal duties due to his connections to Epstein. The stripping of Andrew’s titles and honours intensified last year when King Charles formally removed his remaining royal affiliations, a decision driven by mounting public pressure.

The removal of Ferguson’s honour underscores a broader trend within institutions to distance themselves from figures linked to the Epstein scandal. The City of York’s decision reflects a growing sensitivity to reputational risk and a desire to maintain the integrity of historically significant civic awards.

The Epstein files revealed that Ferguson had maintained contact with Epstein even after his conviction, including emails discussing a potential visit to his Miami home after his release from prison. She reportedly referred to Epstein as a “supreme friend” in correspondence. These revelations, while not indicating legal wrongdoing, fueled the debate over whether Ferguson’s continued association with Epstein was appropriate for someone holding a civic honour.

The situation highlights the complex challenges facing the Royal Family as it navigates the fallout from the Epstein scandal. The scandal has not only led to the removal of titles and honours but has also impacted charitable affiliations. Ferguson’s charity, Sarah’s Trust, announced its closure in February 2026, citing the ongoing scrutiny surrounding her connections to Epstein.

Beyond the loss of the Freedom of the City, Ferguson also lost her Duchess of York title in October 2025 when King Charles stripped Prince Andrew of all his titles. This move was part of a larger effort to reshape the public perception of the monarchy and distance it from controversy.

The repercussions extend beyond titles, and honours. Prince Andrew was reportedly arrested by UK police in February 2026 on suspicion of misconduct in public office, following the release of emails suggesting he may have shared confidential trade information with Epstein. This investigation adds another layer of legal and reputational challenge for the former royal.

The City of York’s decision to revoke Ferguson’s Freedom of the City is a clear signal that institutions are taking a firm stance against associations with individuals linked to the Epstein scandal. It’s a move that reflects a broader reckoning within the Royal Family and a growing demand for accountability and transparency.

Liberal Democrat councillor Darryl Smalley, speaking after the 2022 removal of Prince Andrew’s Freedom, emphasized the importance of the decision. “Having been stripped of his military roles and royal patronages by the Queen, we believe that it is right to remove all links that Prince Andrew still has with our great city,” he said. “I was pleased to see councillors of all parties support this motion and produce it clear that it is no longer appropriate for Prince Andrew to represent York and its residents.”

The unfolding situation raises questions about the long-term impact on the reputation of the York family and the broader Royal Family. As investigations continue and more information comes to light, the consequences of these associations are likely to be felt for years to come.
