Setannya Cuan: Release Date, Cast & Behind-the-Scenes of Babe Cabita’s Final Film

Setannya Cuan: Release Date, Cast & Behind-the-Scenes of Babe Cabita’s Final Film

March 1, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The Indonesian horror-comedy Setannya Cuan is slated for release on March 5, 2026, carrying a bittersweet significance as it marks one of the final on-screen appearances of the beloved comedian Babe Cabita, who passed away earlier this year. The film, initially conceived in 2019, offers a satirical take on the allure of quick riches, supernatural entanglements and self-reflection during the observance of Ramadan.

A Seven-Year Journey to the Screen

Setannya Cuan’s path to release wasn’t straightforward. Production began in 2019, but faced considerable delays, most notably due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Director Jay Sukmo recounted the challenging filming conditions in Malabar, Bandung, where temperatures plummeted to as low as 14 degrees Celsius. “We were all shivering together, wrapped in hotel blankets because of the cold,” Sukmo shared during the film’s gala premiere on February 28, 2026, as reported by Detik.com. The extended production timeline has imbued the project with a poignant resonance, particularly given Babe Cabita’s passing.

A Cast Reflecting the Long Wait

The film boasts a diverse cast, including Ben Kasyafani, Nadine Alexandra, Candil, Dimas Andrean, and the late Babe Cabita. Kasyafani plays Umar, the son of a religious leader who finds himself tempted by the world of illegal lottery, or togel. “The film captures a tendency people had to gamble and dabble in the mystical back then, as the story is set in the past,” Kasyafani explained. He also expressed his surprise at the film’s eventual release after such a lengthy wait. The cast’s shared experiences during the challenging shoot fostered a strong bond, with actors recalling having to build fires to stay warm and connect with local residents for assistance.

Dimas Andrean embodies Levi, a local tough, a role he described as significantly different from his usual characters. He emphasized that his approach to the role involved extensive script reading rather than improvisation, allowing him to fully grasp the nuances of the character. Actress Tizza Radia fondly remembered her on-set interactions with Babe Cabita, with whom she shared several scenes as his on-screen wife. “He was a very supportive co-star, always encouraging others to perform their best,” Radia noted.

From Djoerig Salawe to Setannya Cuan: A Title Reflecting Modern Concerns

Originally titled Djoerig Salawe, the film underwent a name change to Setannya Cuan – a shift that reflects the evolving societal landscape. Producer Robby Hilman Maulana explained that the modern title speaks to the contemporary obsession with financial gain. “In this world, the only thing more frightening than the devil is not having money!” he stated, as reported by Suara.com. The change underscores the film’s commentary on how the pursuit of wealth can lead people to desperate measures, even those involving the supernatural.

A Satirical Lens on Instant Gratification

Director Sahrul Gibran described Setannya Cuan as a blend of humor and social commentary. “At its core, the film satirizes humanity’s desire for instant gratification. We want audiences to laugh, be surprised, and exit with something to ponder,” Gibran said. The film aims to entertain while prompting reflection on the darker side of ambition and the allure of easy money. Liputan6.com notes the film is also a tribute to Babe Cabita.

Beyond the Laughs: A Tribute to Babe Cabita

The release of Setannya Cuan serves as a poignant tribute to Babe Cabita, a well-respected figure in Indonesian comedy. The film’s cast and crew have consistently emphasized the special significance of this project in honoring his memory. The film’s journey from production to release, spanning seven years and overcoming numerous obstacles, adds another layer of emotional weight to its premiere. The film also stars Fico Fahriza, Joe P-Project, Anyun Cadel, Aming, Mega Carefansa, Gabriella Desta, Mongol Stres, Budi Dalton, and Malih Tong Tong.

What’s Next for Setannya Cuan?

With its release date set for March 5, 2026, Setannya Cuan is poised to enter the Indonesian box office. The film’s marketing campaign is expected to lean heavily into its comedic elements and the emotional resonance of Babe Cabita’s final performance. Distribution is being handled by Radepa Black, and the film will be widely available in cinemas across Indonesia. The success of the film will likely hinge on its ability to strike a balance between its satirical humor and its heartfelt tribute to a beloved entertainer.
