Shia LaBeouf Rejects Rehab After New Orleans Arrests, Claims No Alcohol Problem

Shia LaBeouf Rejects Rehab After New Orleans Arrests, Claims No Alcohol Problem

March 2, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Shia LaBeouf is facing continued legal scrutiny and public debate following his recent arrest in New Orleans during Mardi Gras celebrations. The actor, 39, was taken into custody on February 17th on suspicion of simple battery after an altercation outside R Bar in the Marigny neighborhood, and then again on February 26th following a warrant issued by the New Orleans Police Department. While a judge has ordered him to return to rehab and undergo drug testing, LaBeouf has publicly expressed reluctance to re-enter treatment, stating in a recent interview he “just [isn’t] into it.”

The latest developments stem from a rambling interview with journalist Andrew Callaghan on his YouTube channel, “Channel 5,” published on Saturday, February 29th. LaBeouf acknowledged his behavior was “bulls—,” but questioned whether another stint in rehab would be productive. “Does that signify I got to head to rehab again? I’m just not into it, bro. I don’t think my answers are there,” he said.

A Second Arrest and Bond Payments

The initial arrest on February 17th led to LaBeouf’s release on a $100,000 bond. However, the New Orleans Police Department issued a second arrest warrant on February 26th related to the same incident. LaBeouf turned himself in and was again released after posting another $100,000 bond. Attorney Sarah Chervinsky, representing LaBeouf, argued that the repeated arrests and high bond amounts were disproportionate, stating, “No regular person would be required to post over $100,000 in bonds, and be jailed two separate times for one misdemeanor incident.” She further asserted that LaBeouf shouldn’t be held to a higher standard simply since of his public profile, according to the Associated Press.

The Incident at R Bar: What Police Reports Detail

Police reports detail a chaotic scene at R Bar on Royal Street. Officers responded to reports of an assault around 12:45 a.m. On February 17th. According to the reports, LaBeouf was “causing a disturbance” and was asked to leave by bar staff. The situation escalated when LaBeouf allegedly used closed fists to strike one individual multiple times. After briefly leaving the premises, he reportedly returned, becoming “even more aggressive,” and continued to assault the same man, also allegedly punching a second man in the nose. Bystanders eventually restrained LaBeouf until police arrived. He was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries before being arrested.

Beyond Simple Battery: Allegations of Homophobic Slurs and Threats

The incident has taken on additional layers of complexity with reports of alleged homophobic slurs and threats. An additional police report identified a local entertainer as one of the alleged victims, claiming LaBeouf threatened his life and used derogatory language. This adds a potentially serious dimension to the charges beyond the simple battery allegations.

LaBeouf’s Reflections: Alcohol, Anger, and a “Slight Man Complex”

In his interview with Callaghan, LaBeouf took “1,000%” responsibility for the altercation, admitting he “had a great time” on Mardi Gras, despite the consequences. However, he downplayed the role of alcohol in his behavior, stating, “I don’t think I have a drinking problem.” Instead, he suggested his issues stem from anger and ego, describing it as a “small man complex.” He stands at 5 feet 9 inches. This self-diagnosis contrasts with the assessment of Orleans Parish Criminal Court Judge Simone Levine, who last week stated that LaBeouf “does not take his alcohol addiction seriously.”

A Career Marked by Controversy

This is not LaBeouf’s first encounter with legal trouble or public controversy. He has a history of arrests and legal issues, including a 2020 lawsuit filed by his ex-partner, FKA Twigs, alleging sexual battery and assault. The Los Angeles Times covered the case extensively. His career has been marked by both critical acclaim – including roles in films like “Holes” (2003) and “The Peanut Butter Falcon” (2019) – and periods of erratic behavior that have drawn intense media scrutiny. He recently appeared in the film “The Phoenician Scheme” (2025) and “Slauson Rec” (2025).

What’s Next: Court Date and Potential Treatment

LaBeouf’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 19th, according to court records. Despite his expressed reservations, Judge Levine has ordered him to begin substance abuse treatment and undergo weekly drug testing. It remains to be seen whether LaBeouf will comply with the court’s order or continue to challenge the need for rehabilitation. His legal team has not yet issued a formal plea to the charges. The outcome of the case could have significant implications for his career and personal life, and will likely continue to attract considerable media attention. The actor’s willingness to address the underlying issues he identified – anger and ego – outside of a traditional rehab setting will be closely watched.

As reported by WWLTV, newly released video footage shows more of the altercation outside R Bar, depicting LaBeouf removing his shirt and engaging in physical confrontations with multiple individuals.
