Song Ji Hyo Running Man: Screen Time Controversy & Future on Show

Song Ji Hyo Running Man: Screen Time Controversy & Future on Show

March 12, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

For sixteen years, Song Ji-hyo has been a fixture on the South Korean variety show Running Man. Now, the actress is once again facing calls to leave the program, fueled by concerns over limited screen time and perceived disengagement. The latest wave of criticism comes less than three years after a similar controversy threatened her position on the long-running series.

The current scrutiny erupted following the March 8 episode, themed “Run & Fun Company: Spin the Roulette.” Viewers quickly noticed Song’s comparatively subdued presence, observing that she rarely participated in the improvisational skits and conversations that are central to Running Man’s appeal. Reports indicate her solo screen time amounted to a mere ten seconds during the ninety-minute broadcast, largely consisting of reaction shots or appearances in group scenes.

Online communities and Song Ji-hyo’s social media channels were swiftly inundated with criticism, with some viewers questioning her professionalism as a fixed cast member. This isn’t an isolated incident. In June 2023, Song faced similar backlash for her passive participation in another episode, struggling to fully engage in an improvised scene with fellow cast members Jun So-min, Kim Jong-kook, Haha, and Yang Se-chan. She was observed quietly eating ice cream while the others performed, a moment that resonated negatively with some viewers.

Interestingly, during the 2023 controversy, fellow Running Man mainstay Yoo Jae Seok publicly defended Song, stating, “Ji Hyo feels upset about her performance and tries hard. I encouraged her not to worry too much and just work harder next week.” This display of solidarity highlighted the close bonds within the cast, but it hasn’t quelled the recurring concerns about Song’s involvement.

Song Ji-hyo’s journey with Running Man hasn’t been without its challenges. In 2016, she faced a potential forced departure when the production team initially informed her of plans to remove her from the cast. Yet, a strong outpouring of support from fans ultimately led to her remaining with the show.

Despite the ongoing criticism, Song Ji-hyo recently reaffirmed her commitment to Running Man. In a YouTube video, she explicitly stated her intention to remain with the program, declaring, “I won’t quit on my own unless the producers decide to conclude the show.” This statement underscores her deep attachment to the series and her willingness to continue as a cast member, provided the show itself continues.

Born Cheon Seong-im on August 15, 1981, in Pohang, South Korea, Song Ji-hyo began her career as a model before transitioning to acting. She debuted in the film Wishing Stairs (2003) and gained wider recognition through roles in the television dramas Princess Hours (2006) and Jumong (2006). Her filmography includes A Frozen Flower (2008), New World (2013), and Intruder (2020).

However, it’s her long-standing role on Running Man, which began in 2010, that has brought her international recognition. The show’s popularity has extended beyond South Korea, cultivating a dedicated global fanbase. This makes the current situation particularly sensitive, as any significant changes to the cast could have repercussions for the show’s international appeal.

The recurring controversies surrounding Song Ji-hyo’s screen time and engagement raise questions about the dynamics within Running Man and the challenges of maintaining a long-running variety show. While Song has expressed her desire to remain with the program, whether she can address the concerns of viewers and recapture her former standing as the show’s “ace” remains to be seen. The situation highlights the delicate balance between creative freedom, audience expectations, and the pressures of maintaining a consistent presence in the highly competitive world of Korean entertainment. The coming weeks will likely be crucial in determining the future of Song Ji-hyo’s role on Running Man and the show’s ability to navigate this latest challenge.
