Stephen Colbert to Cowrite New Lord of the Rings Film | ‘Shadow of the Past’

Stephen Colbert to Cowrite New Lord of the Rings Film | ‘Shadow of the Past’

NEW YORK — Stephen Colbert is trading late-night monologues for Middle-earth. The outgoing host of “The Late Show” May 21 will begin a new chapter as a screenwriter, co-writing a new installment in the “Lord of the Rings” franchise, he announced Tuesday alongside director Peter Jackson.

The project, currently titled “The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past,” will be produced by Warner Bros. Discovery’s New Line Cinema, the studio behind the original trilogy and Jackson’s “The Hobbit” films. The announcement came via a video shared on Warner Bros.’ social media channels, featuring Colbert and Jackson discussing the project.

“I’m pretty happy about it,” Colbert told Jackson in the video. “You know what the books mean to me and what your films mean to me.” The comedian’s lifelong passion for J.R.R. Tolkien’s work is well-documented; he even appeared in a cameo alongside his family in Jackson’s 2013 film, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”

This new film isn’t intended to replace or overshadow the previously announced “The Hunt for Gollum,” directed by Andy Serkis and slated for release in 2027. Instead, “Shadow of the Past” represents a broadening of the cinematic universe, tapping into previously unadapted material from Tolkien’s “The Fellowship of the Ring.”

Colbert explained that the story will focus on events occurring 14 years after Frodo’s departure from Middle-earth, following Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they revisit the early stages of their journey. Crucially, the narrative will also introduce Elanor, Sam’s daughter, and a discovery she makes that sheds light on a critical vulnerability during the War of the Ring. “The thing I found myself reading over and over again were the six chapters early on in (The Fellowship of the Ring) that y’all never developed into the first movie back in the day … and I thought, ‘Oh, wait, maybe that could be its own story that could fit into the larger story,’” Colbert said.

Colbert won’t be working in isolation. He’s collaborating with seasoned screenwriters Philippa Boyens, a veteran of both the “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies, and Peter McGee, a screenwriter and, as Colbert revealed, the individual who helped him refine the story’s framing. Jackson will also be involved in the development process, bringing his extensive experience with Tolkien’s world to bear.

The timing of this announcement coincides with Colbert’s impending departure from “The Late Show.” CBS announced last year that the show would be canceled due to financial pressures, bringing Colbert’s 11-year run to a close. “It turns out I’m going to be free starting this summer,” Colbert quipped in the announcement video, acknowledging the newfound opportunity.

The decision to expand the “Lord of the Rings” franchise with new stories reflects the enduring popularity of Tolkien’s work and the continued appetite for cinematic adaptations. While the initial trilogy, directed by Jackson, remains a landmark achievement in filmmaking – grossing nearly $6 billion worldwide – the franchise has seen continued interest with “The Hobbit” trilogy and now, these new projects.

The choice of Stephen Colbert as a screenwriter might seem unconventional, but it underscores a strategic move by Warner Bros. To tap into a passionate fanbase and generate buzz. Colbert’s genuine enthusiasm for Tolkien, combined with his comedic sensibility and storytelling skills, could bring a fresh perspective to the franchise. His appearance at New York Comic Con in 2024, where he moderated a “Hobbit” panel in full costume, demonstrates his deep engagement with the source material.

“Shadow of the Past” represents more than just another addition to the “Lord of the Rings” canon. It’s a testament to the enduring power of Tolkien’s world and a signal that the franchise is poised for continued growth and exploration. The film’s focus on familiar characters like Sam, Merry, and Pippin, alongside the introduction of a new generation represented by Elanor, suggests a desire to both honor the legacy of the original trilogy and forge new paths within Middle-earth. The unveiling of a previously unexplored aspect of the War of the Ring – a secret that nearly led to defeat – promises a compelling narrative that will intrigue both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

With production now underway, audiences can anticipate further details about “The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past” in the coming months. The film is expected to add another layer to the rich tapestry of Middle-earth, offering a new perspective on a beloved story and solidifying the franchise’s place in cinematic history.
