The Line It Is Drawn: Spider-Man, TMNT & Comic Book “What Ifs”
The latest installment of The Line it is Drawn has wrapped, showcasing artist interpretations sparked by fan suggestions. This week’s challenge, centered around the “Ides of March,” prompted creatives to envision tweaks and nudges to existing storylines rather than wholesale revisions. Simultaneously, the prompt for next week’s challenge has been revealed: a crossover concept inspired by the success of Andy Weir’s novel, Project Hail Mary.
For those unfamiliar, The Line it is Drawn is a weekly event hosted by ComicsShouldBeGood (@csbg on Twitter) where a topic is presented, fans submit ideas, and artists then render their interpretations. Participation requires following @csbg on Twitter to submit suggestions, with a deadline of 11:59 PM Pacific Time on Tuesdays. Suggestions can also be made on Bluesky at @briancronin.bsky.social.
“Ides of March” Interpretations
This week’s theme asked fans to propose subtle changes to established comic book narratives – not grand overhauls, but thoughtful adjustments. Several suggestions were selected, resulting in a diverse range of artwork.
Aaronmec98 suggested a crossover between Spider-Man and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Daniel Middleton brought this idea to life with a dynamic illustration, and his Webtoons comic, Valor Family Tree, is available to view online. The resulting artwork depicts a lively team-up, hinting at the potential for a fun, action-packed story.
Another suggestion, from daviddwwilliams, proposed giving Black Bolt of the Inhumans a device to allow him to speak normally at will. Nick Butch visualized this concept, with his work available to view on Instagram. The artwork depicts a potential solution to a long-standing challenge for the character, offering a glimpse into a more communicative Black Bolt.
mereygnome envisioned Martian Manhunter assembling a Justice League Task Force with his original Justice League Detroit teammates. Rod Allen provided the artwork, and his work can be found on Instagram. This suggestion highlights a desire to revisit and expand upon classic team dynamics.
Finally, ThatCultDude proposed a striking visual: Juggernaut as a Herald of Galactus. Brendan Tobin’s artwork captures the sheer power and unexpectedness of this pairing, and his work can be viewed at his blog.
The next challenge, inspired by the popularity of Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary, asks participants to imagine a team-up between a famous fictional character and a notable comic book alien to save Earth. Submissions are open until 11:59 PM Pacific Time on Tuesday. Keep an eye on @csbg on Twitter and @briancronin.bsky.social for the prompt and to submit your ideas.
