Timothée Chalamet’s Ballet & Opera Comments Spark Backlash From Dancers

Timothée Chalamet’s Ballet & Opera Comments Spark Backlash From Dancers

March 11, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The internet is still pirouetting over comments made by Timothée Chalamet regarding ballet and opera and now, the dance world is responding directly. The Dune star ignited a debate last month when he expressed a reluctance to work in those art forms, suggesting they felt like endeavors being “kept alive” despite waning public interest. What began as a conversation about preserving cinema has quickly escalated, drawing reactions from dancers, companies, and even fellow actors.

A Backstage Perspective: Chalamet’s Family Connection

The controversy feels particularly layered given Chalamet’s personal connection to the ballet world. As reported on X (formerly Twitter), the actor has spoken about growing up backstage at the New York City Ballet, with his grandmother, mother, and sister all having danced with the company. This familial link adds a complex dimension to his comments, prompting questions about whether his perspective stems from an insider’s view or a broader observation about the arts landscape.

Initial Backlash and Industry Responses

Chalamet’s remarks, made during a February discussion with Matthew McConaughey at the University of Texas (as reported by the BBC), quickly drew criticism. The Royal Ballet and Opera, as well as The Metropolitan Opera, were among the institutions that responded, though many responses were less formal, taking the form of social media posts and statements from individual artists. The actor himself acknowledged the potential for a negative reaction, quipping, “I just lost 14 cents in viewership. I just took shots for no reason.”

Misty Copeland Weighs In: Enduring Relevance

Perhaps the most prominent response came from Misty Copeland, the celebrated principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre. Copeland, who also collaborated with Chalamet on promotional efforts for his recent film, Marty Supreme, addressed the issue during a panel discussion shared on TikTok by Campaign. She acknowledged that ballet and opera aren’t currently dominant forces in pop culture, but emphasized their enduring cultural relevance.

“First, I have to say that it’s very interesting that he invited me to be a part of promoting Marty Supreme with respect to my art form. But I think that it’s important that we acknowledge that yes, this is an art form that is not popular and a part of pop culture as movies are, but that doesn’t imply it doesn’t have enduring relevance in culture. And I think that it’s often mistaken when something is popular that it’s more meaningful or more impactful. And there’s a reason that the opera and ballet have been around for over 400 years.”

Copeland further stressed the importance of access to these art forms, noting that her career has been dedicated to expanding opportunities for wider audiences. She argued that increased access fosters understanding and appreciation for the value of ballet and opera.

Beyond Copeland: Other Voices from the Dance Community

Copeland wasn’t alone in her response. Tiler Peck, a principal dancer for the New York City Ballet, shared her thoughts in a video posted to social media, highlighting the dedication and passion of those who work within these art forms. Jovani Furlan, a principal dancer for the New York City and Miami Ballets, took a more direct approach, publicly challenging Chalamet’s comments with a video of his own.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about the idea that ‘no one cares about ballet or opera anymore.’ For those of us who live inside these art forms, that couldn’t sense further from the truth. Every day I walk into a studio where dancers are pushing their bodies past exhaustion in pursuit of something beautiful. I rehearse alongside musicians, singers, stage crews, costume designers, and choreographers who dedicate their lives to telling stories.”

The Timing: Oscars and a Potential Platform

The timing of this debate adds another layer of intrigue. The controversy unfolded just before the 2026 Academy Awards, where Chalamet is nominated for Best Actor for his role in Marty Supreme. Notably, Copeland herself will be present at the ceremony as part of the performance for “I Lied To You” from the film Sinners, which is nominated for Best Original Song. This creates the potential for an unexpected encounter between the actor and one of his most vocal critics.

What’s Next: Awaiting Chalamet’s Response

As of now, Chalamet has not publicly addressed the widespread reaction to his comments. It remains to be seen whether he will offer further clarification or engage in a dialogue with the dance community. The situation highlights a broader conversation about the role of the arts in contemporary society and the challenges faced by classical art forms in maintaining relevance and attracting audiences. The Oscars ceremony will undoubtedly be a focal point, offering a potential platform for further discussion or, at the very least, an awkward run-in.

The unfolding narrative serves as a reminder of the power of art to provoke conversation and the importance of respecting the dedication and artistry of performers across all disciplines. Whether this controversy will impact Chalamet’s Oscar chances remains to be seen, but it has undoubtedly sparked a vital dialogue within the performing arts world.
