Torrevieja: ‘Farra’ Play & ‘Carmina Burana’ Concert This Weekend

March 25, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Torrevieja is set to conclude its sixth National Amateur Theatre Competition with a flourish this week, culminating in a performance of “Farra” on Friday, March 27th. The staging of “Farra” will also mark the city’s observance of World Theatre Day. But the cultural momentum doesn’t stop there; the following evening, the Torrevieja International Auditorium will host a performance of Carl Orff’s iconic “Carmina Burana” by the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra.

The National Amateur Theatre Competition, “Raúl Ferrández,” has been running since March 20th, showcasing five selected companies from across Spain. Performances have included “Floresta” by Antrios Teatro (Elche), “Los amantes sobrehumanos” by La Bestia Teatro (Brañosera, Palencia), “La dama duende” by La Nómada Teatro (Salamanca), and “Servicio de habitaciones” by La Geranio Produce (Madrid). The competition concludes with “La canción de los ausentes” by Grupo de Teatro de San Javier (Murcia) on Tuesday, March 24th, before the awards ceremony and “Farra” performance on Friday.

A Baroque Cabaret to Close the Competition

“Farra,” described as a scenic proposal that connects the Spanish Golden Age with contemporary sensibilities, promises a vibrant and eclectic experience. The production blends verse, live music, circus elements, and humor within a baroque cabaret aesthetic. Set during a carnival atmosphere, the play aims to be both festive and critical, inviting audiences to view reality from a fresh perspective. The performance begins at 8:30 PM following the awards presentation at 8:00 PM. Tickets are available at the Teatro Municipal box office and via www.culturatorrevieja.com.

The competition itself awards prizes for best actor, best actress, a special audience award named after Maribel Vallejos (worth €500), and a best play award (€2000). The awards ceremony will be held at the Teatro Municipal on Friday, March 27th, immediately preceding the performance of “Farra.”

“Carmina Burana” – A Sold-Out Spectacle

The following evening, Saturday, March 28th, the Torrevieja International Auditorium will host a performance of “Carmina Burana,” a co-production of the Municipal Institute of Culture ‘Joaquín Chapaprieta,’ the Torrevieja Symphony Orchestra, and UTE Cultura Torrevieja. Notably, this concert is already sold out. The performance, beginning at 7:00 PM, is described as an intense musical experience, emphasizing rhythm, choral power, and dramatic impact.

The production features a robust artistic lineup, including soprano Rocío Martínez, baritone José Manuel Díaz, and tenor José Manuel Delicado. Choral support will be provided by the Municipal School of Coral Torrevieja, the Coro del Puerto de Alicante, the Coro Orff, the Coral ‘Francisco Vallejos,’ and the Orfeón Crevillentino. Selena Cancino will conduct, with Armando Bernabéu Andréu serving as the guest director.

Torrevieja’s Growing Cultural Calendar

These events underscore Torrevieja’s commitment to a vibrant cultural scene. The city, located in the Alicante province of Spain, has been actively promoting itself as a destination for arts and entertainment. The National Amateur Theatre Competition, now in its sixth year, is a key component of this strategy, attracting companies from across the country. The sold-out status of “Carmina Burana” further demonstrates the local appetite for high-caliber musical performances. You can identify more information about events in the region at torrevieja.es.

The selection of plays for the competition this year came from a pool of 52 proposals originating from 19 different provinces. The diversity of submissions highlights the continued vitality of amateur theatre across Spain. The competition’s focus on both established works, like Calderón de la Barca’s “La dama duende,” and contemporary pieces, such as “Los amantes sobrehumanos,” demonstrates a commitment to showcasing a wide range of theatrical styles.

Looking Ahead: The Teatro Municipal’s Programming

Following the conclusion of the theatre competition and the “Carmina Burana” concert, the Teatro Municipal de Torrevieja will continue to host a diverse range of performances. While a detailed schedule beyond the immediate future isn’t currently available, the venue regularly features theatrical productions, dance performances, and musical concerts. Information on upcoming events can be found on the culturatorrevieja.com website as it becomes available. The city also recently announced that it will be hosting a performance of “FARRA” by the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico as part of the World Theatre Day celebrations, as noted on their Facebook page.
