Trump Won’t Rule Out Iran Ground Troops as US Campaign Timeline Shifts

Trump Won’t Rule Out Iran Ground Troops as US Campaign Timeline Shifts

March 2, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

President Trump on Monday didn’t rule out deploying U.S. Ground troops to Iran, stating he would consider it “if necessary,” as his administration navigates conflicting timelines regarding the duration of the ongoing military operation, dubbed “Operation Epic Fury.” The statement comes after a weekend of strikes against Iran following the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and amidst growing concerns over escalating regional conflict and mounting casualties.

Speaking to the New York Post, Trump asserted he has “no yips with respect to boots on the ground” and wouldn’t categorically exclude the possibility of sending troops, a departure from the approaches of previous administrations. He indicated that while he “probably” doesn’t anticipate needing ground forces, he’s prepared to utilize them if the situation demands it.

Operation Epic Fury: A Shifting Timeline

The initial wave of strikes, launched early Saturday, resulted in at least 555 confirmed deaths in Iran, according to Iranian state media citing the Iranian Red Crescent. Tragically, this includes over 100 children killed when a girls’ elementary school in Minab was struck. Israeli strikes in Lebanon have as well resulted in 31 fatalities, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. The U.S. Has also suffered casualties, with at least six U.S. Service members killed by Iran’s retaliatory attacks, and 11 Israelis reported killed in Iran’s subsequent missile and drone attacks.

The conflicting messaging from the Trump administration regarding the operation’s length has added to the uncertainty. Initially announcing the strikes, Trump described the operation as “massive and ongoing,” and vowed to continue until “all of our objectives are achieved.” However, he later suggested to Axios that the campaign might be swift, potentially concluding in “two or three days.” On Sunday, he told the Daily Mail he anticipated a four-week process, a timeline he reiterated at a Medal of Honor ceremony on Monday, though he conceded it “could go longer.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth echoed this ambiguity during a Pentagon press briefing alongside Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Dan Caine. Hegseth declined to rule out deploying ground troops, stating it would be “foolishness” to publicly limit U.S. Options. As reported by the Associated Press, both Hegseth and Caine emphasized the unpredictable nature of the conflict and avoided providing a definitive timeline for its resolution.

The Khamenei Factor and Regional Implications

The operation’s initial focus on eliminating Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, represents a significant escalation. Time Magazine reports that the question of succession is now paramount, with potential candidates emerging to fill the power vacuum. This internal struggle within Iran adds another layer of complexity to the already volatile situation.

The broader regional implications are substantial. The strikes have already triggered retaliatory attacks and heightened tensions across the Middle East. The potential deployment of U.S. Ground troops would further escalate the conflict, potentially drawing in other regional actors and increasing the risk of a wider war. The situation is further complicated by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the potential for a two-front crisis.

Trump’s Objectives: A Multifaceted Approach

During Monday’s Medal of Honor ceremony, Trump clarified his administration’s objectives in the campaign. These include destroying Iran’s missile capabilities, “annihilating” its navy, ending its nuclear ambitions, and preventing Iran from supporting terrorist groups outside its borders. He maintained that the U.S. Is “already substantially ahead of our time projections,” but refrained from providing a firm complete date for the military operation.

Gen. Caine, speaking alongside Hegseth at the Pentagon, emphasized that achieving these objectives would be a protracted process, requiring “difficult and gritty operate.” He also cautioned against setting a fixed timeline, acknowledging that the situation could evolve and necessitate adjustments to the military strategy. The Guardian reported that Trump initially cited debunked claims regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities as justification for the strikes.

The administration’s willingness to consider deploying ground troops, coupled with the shifting timelines and broad objectives, suggests a flexible and potentially prolonged military campaign. The situation remains highly fluid, and the coming weeks will be critical in determining the ultimate outcome of “Operation Epic Fury.”

What’s next? The immediate focus will be on monitoring Iran’s response to the ongoing strikes and assessing the effectiveness of the military campaign. The administration will likely continue to weigh the risks and benefits of deploying ground troops, taking into account the potential for escalation and the impact on regional stability. Further announcements regarding the operation’s timeline and objectives are expected in the coming days, though the precise duration and scope of the conflict remain uncertain.
