Valerie Perrine Dies: Oscar Nominee and ‘Superman’ Star Was 82

Valerie Perrine Dies: Oscar Nominee and ‘Superman’ Star Was 82

March 24, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Valerie Perrine, the actress who captivated audiences as Lex Luthor’s girlfriend in the iconic Superman films and earned an Academy Award nomination for her powerful performance in Bob Fosse’s Lenny, has died at the age of 82. The news was announced by filmmaker Stacey Souther on Facebook, marking the end of a career that spanned decades and encompassed both mainstream success and courageous vulnerability.

Souther’s post shared the heartbreaking news and immediately directed attention to a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the costs of her final wish: to be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Souther noted that after a 15-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, Perrine’s finances were depleted, prompting the call for support from fans, and colleagues.

A Career Forged in Unexpected Turns

Perrine’s path to acting was anything but conventional. She began her career as a showgirl in Las Vegas, but a tragic event – the accidental shooting death of her fiancé, a gun importer – prompted a move to Los Angeles. There, she found herself entangled in the orbit of celebrity hairdresser Jay Sebring, who was later a victim of the Manson Family murders alongside Sharon Tate. These early experiences, though shadowed by loss, seemed to inform a certain resilience that would characterize her later work.

Her early film roles were equally unconventional, including a part in the film version of Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five (1972) and a role in The Last American Hero (1973). Notably, she became the first actress to appear nude intentionally on US television in a 1973 PBS play, Steambath. The scene, as reported by The Guardian, proved surprisingly lucrative for the public broadcaster, becoming a fundraising tool.

Breakthrough Roles and Critical Acclaim

The turning point in Perrine’s career arrived in 1974 with Bob Fosse’s Lenny, a biopic of comedian Lenny Bruce. Her portrayal of Honey Bruce, Bruce’s wife, was a revelation, earning her the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival and nominations for both a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. A 2023 profile in The Hollywood Reporter highlighted the depth and vulnerability she brought to the role, cementing her status as a serious dramatic actress.

While Lenny established her critical credibility, it was her role as Miss Teschmacher in Richard Donner’s Superman (1978) and its 1980 sequel that brought her widespread recognition. As Lex Luthor’s accomplice, she provided a memorable blend of charm and menace, becoming a beloved character for a generation of moviegoers.

Later Work and a Courageous Battle

Perrine continued to work steadily throughout the 1980s and beyond, appearing in films like The Border (1982) alongside Jack Nicholson and Can’t Stop the Music (1980), the quasi-biopic of the Village People. She later admitted to regretting her involvement in Can’t Stop the Music, telling reporters it “ruined my career” and prompting a move to Europe. She also appeared in Water (1985) and What Women Desire (2000), praising Michael Caine as “the nicest human being I’ve ever worked with” during filming.

In 2015, Perrine received a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. Her experience with the illness became the subject of a 45-minute documentary directed by Stacey Souther, which premiered in 2019. Souther described Perrine’s approach to the disease as one of “incredible courage and compassion,” noting that she “never once complained.”

The Legacy of a Versatile Performer

Valerie Perrine’s career was marked by a willingness to grab risks and embrace challenging roles. From the gritty realism of Lenny to the fantastical world of Superman, she demonstrated a remarkable range and a commitment to her craft. Her story, as revealed in recent profiles, is also one of resilience in the face of personal tragedy and a courageous battle against illness.

The outpouring of support for the GoFundMe campaign underscores the enduring affection fans hold for Perrine and her work. The campaign aims to ensure she receives a dignified farewell, allowing her to rest in peace at Forest Lawn Cemetery, a fitting tribute to a life lived fully and a career that left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment.

Continuing Support: Donations to the GoFundMe campaign to help cover Valerie Perrine’s funeral expenses are still being accepted and can be made through the link provided by Stacey Souther: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-us-give-valerie-perrine-the-farewell-she-deserves
