War of the Worlds (2025) Sweeps 2026 Razzie Awards: Worst Picture & More

War of the Worlds (2025) Sweeps 2026 Razzie Awards: Worst Picture & More

March 15, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The 46th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards, affectionately known as the Razzies, have been handed out and the results were…decisive. War of the Worlds, the 2025 science fiction adaptation starring Ice Cube, swept the ceremony, taking home five awards – the most of any film this year. The awards, a playful counterpoint to the Oscars held the weekend prior, celebrate the year’s most critically panned cinematic efforts.

The Razzie Awards, voted on by over 1,200 film enthusiasts, journalists, and industry professionals, didn’t hold back in their assessment of the film. War of the Worlds secured wins for Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Ice Cube), Worst Director (Rich Lee), Worst Screenplay (Kenny Golde and Marc Hyman), and Worst Remake. Organizers described the film as a “cult hate-watch classic” and a “near sweeper of our $4.97 trophy,” as reported by the BBC.

A Surveillance State Take on a Classic

This iteration of War of the Worlds, a reimagining of H.G. Wells’ 1898 novel, took a unique approach, framing the alien invasion through the lens of a surveillance industry expert. Ice Cube plays the lead, a Department of Homeland Security specialist tasked with defending humanity – all from his desk. The concept, however, failed to resonate with critics or audiences, earning the film overwhelmingly negative reviews and abysmal ratings on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

The original War of the Worlds, published in 1898, remains a cornerstone of science fiction, exploring themes of colonialism, fear, and the fragility of human civilization. Numerous adaptations have followed, including the iconic 1953 film and Steven Spielberg’s 2005 blockbuster starring Tom Cruise. This 2025 version, however, landed far from those heights.

Beyond Ice Cube: Other “Winners”

While War of the Worlds dominated the headlines, other films likewise received the Razzie treatment. Rebel Wilson was named Worst Actress for her role in the action-comedy Bride Hard, described as featuring a “not-quite-believable performance as an action hero with weaponized curling irons.” Scarlet Rose Stallone, daughter of Sylvester Stallone, earned Worst Supporting Actress for Gunslingers.

Perhaps the most unusual win went to the seven CGI-enhanced dwarfs from Disney’s live-action Snow White remake, who collectively received the Worst Supporting Actor award and Worst Screen Combo. The Razzies pointedly noted the film’s financial failure, stating it “cost a fortune and lost a fortune,” with estimates suggesting a $170 million loss on a $300 million budget, according to Variety.

A Silver Lining: The Razzie Redeemer Award

Not all news from the Razzies was negative. Kate Hudson received the Razzie Redeemer Award, recognizing her career resurgence after previously receiving nominations for less-than-stellar performances in films like Music and Mother’s Day. Hudson’s Oscar nomination for her role in Song Sung Blue signaled a critical shift, earning her the award for demonstrating a significant improvement in her function.

What’s Next for the Razzies (and the Films They Recognize)?

The Razzies serve as a lighthearted, if pointed, commentary on the film industry. While the awards themselves carry little practical weight, they often spark conversation and offer a different perspective on the year’s cinematic landscape. The ceremony’s timing, just before the Oscars, ensures maximum visibility and provides a contrasting narrative to the celebration of Hollywood’s successes.

As for the films recognized, their fate is largely sealed. War of the Worlds, despite its Razzie haul, is unlikely to notice a resurgence in popularity. However, the notoriety might grant it a lasting place in cinematic infamy – a “cult hate-watch classic,” as the Razzies themselves declared. Disney’s Snow White, already facing scrutiny for its creative choices and financial performance, will likely be viewed as a cautionary tale within the industry. And Kate Hudson will be hoping her Oscar momentum continues, distancing herself further from the Razzie spotlight.
