World Book Day 2024: Schools Celebrate with Costumes | BBC News

World Book Day 2024: Schools Celebrate with Costumes | BBC News

March 5, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The annual celebration of reading, World Book Day, unfolded across the United Kingdom and Ireland today, March 5, 2026, with schools embracing the tradition of dressing up as favorite literary characters. Beyond the costumes, however, a deeper conversation is taking place about the evolving role of books in a world increasingly dominated by digital entertainment.

In Northern Ireland, the Irish Children’s Laureate, Patricia Forde, is currently on a tour, emphasizing the vital connection between reading and overall well-being. According to reporting from BBC News NI, Forde argues that individuals who are read to and who develop a personal reading habit “do better in school, better in life and, this is the killer, they are happier people.” This sentiment underscores a growing awareness of the cognitive and emotional benefits of literacy, particularly in an age where screen time often overshadows traditional reading.

The challenge, as Forde points out, isn’t a lack of interest in stories, but rather competition for attention. “To read in today’s society is competition against technology, particularly computer, television or tablet screens,” she stated. This observation reflects a broader industry concern about maintaining readership in the face of readily available digital distractions. The focus is shifting towards finding ways to make reading not just accessible, but also appealing in a landscape saturated with alternative forms of entertainment.

Fighting Words NI, a charity dedicated to improving the creative writing skills of children from high-need schools, is partnering with Forde to encourage young people to engage with books. Workshops are being held across the region, giving pupils the opportunity to experience the joy of storytelling firsthand. Eight-year-classic Ishan, a participant in one of these workshops, described the initial reluctance to write, but then the excitement that follows when inspiration strikes. “At first you don’t want to write,” he said, “But when you get in there, you have lots of ideas that you want to write and when they say stop you’re like, ‘oh man I want to write a lot more’.” This anecdote highlights the power of creative encouragement and the intrinsic reward of expressing oneself through writing.

Nine-year-old Scarlett echoed this sentiment, enjoying the visual aspect of storytelling. “Because you get to draw the pictures and you get to draw the characters,” she explained. However, she also acknowledged the complexity of the process: “it’s very complicated because you have to think of the ideas.” This illustrates the cognitive demands of creative writing and the importance of fostering imagination and problem-solving skills in young learners.

World Book Day itself has evolved over the years. Originating from a Spanish tradition, the first World Book Day was held on April 23, 1996, as noted in BBC archives. The event has since become a global phenomenon, with schools and communities organizing events to promote reading and literacy. This year, World Book Day also saw a spotlight on new releases, including the publication of a final book by the Winnie the Pooh illustrator, following his death, as reported by BBC News.

Beyond the school celebrations, the commercial side of World Book Day is also significant. The official World Book Day website announced the 2026 £1/€1.50 books on September 16, 2025, aiming to encourage more children to read for fun. The Week Junior Book Awards 2025 winners were also announced on October 3, 2025, recognizing excellence in children’s literature. These initiatives demonstrate a concerted effort to not only promote reading but also to celebrate the authors and illustrators who create the books that inspire young readers.

The BBC is providing comprehensive coverage of World Book Day, including news, video, and live updates. A recent report highlighted a world record attempt for the biggest reading lesson, although another featured a lighthearted segment with Scott Mills. This broad media attention underscores the cultural importance of World Book Day and its continued relevance in a rapidly changing media landscape.

The emphasis on parental involvement, as highlighted by Forde – “Parents make readers. Reading to your child when they’re going to bed at night. Teachers make readers…” – is a crucial element in fostering a lifelong love of reading. It’s a reminder that reading isn’t just a skill to be taught in schools, but a habit to be nurtured at home. The challenge for educators and parents alike is to find ways to make reading a compelling and enjoyable experience for children, ensuring that books continue to compete for attention in a world filled with digital distractions.

As the day concludes, the message remains clear: reading is not just about acquiring knowledge, but about fostering imagination, empathy, and a lifelong love of learning. The efforts of organizations like Fighting Words NI, the advocacy of figures like Patricia Forde, and the continued celebration of World Book Day all contribute to this vital mission.
