Zero Parades: Disco Elysium Creators Embrace Failure in New CRPG

Zero Parades: Disco Elysium Creators Embrace Failure in New CRPG

March 25, 2026 Laura Fontaine - Entertainment Editor Entertainment

ZA/UM, the studio behind the critically acclaimed Disco Elysium, is charting a new course with Zero Parades: For Dead Spies, an upcoming spy-themed CRPG. A recent extended play session, as reported by GameSpot, reveals a core mechanic that flips the script on traditional gaming frustration: failure is not a roadblock, but a deliberately fun element of the experience.

The announcement, formally made at Gamescom Opening Night Live in August 2025, though a teaser had surfaced earlier in March as “Project C4,” has understandably drawn comparisons to Disco Elysium. However, ZA/UM is actively attempting to distance Zero Parades from its predecessor, acknowledging the inevitable scrutiny whereas emphasizing distinct design choices.

A Different Kind of RPG Landscape

Zero Parades distinguishes itself from Disco Elysium right from the start. Instead of beginning the game in a hotel, players uncover themselves in a safe house. This seemingly modest change, as principal writer Siim Sinamäe explained to Wes Fenlon at the Game Developers Conference (GDC), is intentional. “Let’s do a safe house, you know, we don’t want to invite too many comparisons because people, in bad faith, they will already compare and say that it’s the same thing, despite there not being a body hanging out in the yard, right?” PC Gamer reports.

The narrative also shifts gears. Players take on the role of Hershel Wilks, a spy who has been effectively disavowed by her superiors after a mission gone awry. This contrasts sharply with the protagonist of Disco Elysium, the amnesiac detective Harry Du Bois. Sinamäe further elaborated on the thematic differences, stating that espionage involves “a lot of dubious things,” diverging from the “black and white” pursuit of justice inherent in police perform.

The Weight of Expectations

The shadow of Disco Elysium looms large. Released in 2019, the isometric RPG garnered widespread acclaim for its innovative skill system, compelling narrative, and unique art style. However, the development of Disco Elysium was marred by internal conflict, with key members of the original team departing ZA/UM to form their own studios. TheGamer notes that several of these new companies announced their formation on the same day, each claiming to be developing spiritual successors to the beloved CRPG.

This context adds pressure on ZA/UM to deliver with Zero Parades. As Tessa Kaur writes for TheGamer, the studio is facing the challenge of meeting expectations set by a game that many consider a modern classic. The article points out that the game’s aesthetic – isometric perspective, painterly backgrounds – and its thematic focus on failure and fate, immediately evoke Disco Elysium.

Embracing Failure as Gameplay

Despite the comparisons, Zero Parades appears to be forging its own identity, particularly through its embrace of failure. GameSpot’s Lucy, after spending significant time with the game, highlights that failure isn’t simply a negative outcome; it’s an integral part of the gameplay loop and, surprisingly, enjoyable. The specifics of how this mechanic functions remain largely undisclosed, but the initial reports suggest a system where setbacks contribute to the unfolding narrative and offer unique opportunities.

This design choice represents a departure from traditional RPGs, where failure often leads to reloading a save or restarting a section. By making failure a fun and meaningful component, ZA/UM is potentially offering a fresh and engaging experience for players.

Navigating a Shifting Landscape

The development of Zero Parades also reflects a broader shift within ZA/UM. The studio has been navigating internal changes and external pressures since the success of Disco Elysium. The departure of key personnel and the emergence of competing studios have created a complex landscape for the company.

Sinamäe’s comments about avoiding comparisons suggest a conscious effort to establish Zero Parades as a distinct entity, rather than a mere sequel or imitation. The studio’s stated desire to avoid “repeating our greatest hits” indicates a willingness to take risks and explore new creative territory.

What’s on the Horizon

Currently, a firm release date for Zero Parades: For Dead Spies remains unconfirmed. The game was showcased at Gamescom in August 2025, and a demo was available for play at GDC in March 2026. ZA/UM has not yet announced specific platform availability, but given the nature of the game and the studio’s previous releases, a PC launch is highly probable.

The studio’s focus now appears to be on refining the gameplay experience and further differentiating Zero Parades from Disco Elysium. Whether they can successfully navigate the expectations of fans and critics remains to be seen, but the early reports suggest a game with a unique vision and a willingness to challenge conventional RPG tropes. GameSpot’s video coverage offers a glimpse into the potential of this intriguing new title.
