Dominican Republic: Infant Deaths Down, Respiratory Viruses & Dengue Cases Rise – 2026 Update

Dominican Republic: Infant Deaths Down, Respiratory Viruses & Dengue Cases Rise – 2026 Update

March 6, 2026 Nkechi Okonkwo- Health Editor Health

The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Public Health has reported 224 infant deaths in the first weeks of 2026. While this figure represents a significant loss, data indicates a potential downward trend in some areas, with 22 infant deaths reported during the seventh epidemiological week of the year – fewer than the 37 recorded in the same week in 2025. Still, ongoing monitoring of respiratory viruses, dengue, leptospirosis, and malaria cases continues to be a priority for public health officials.

Regional Distribution of Infant Mortality

The majority of these infant deaths have been concentrated in specific regions of the country. Santo Domingo accounts for the highest number of cases, with 79 deaths, followed by Santiago with 26, and the National District with 17. These areas likely reflect higher population densities and potentially greater access to healthcare facilities, which may contribute to more comprehensive reporting of infant mortality data. It’s important to note that hospitals in these areas function as referral centers, handling complex obstetric and neonatal cases, which naturally increases the absolute number of reported events.

Neonatal Mortality Trends

Specifically looking at neonatal mortality – deaths occurring within the first 28 days of life – 21 deaths were reported, bringing the cumulative total for 2026 to 198. This represents a 14% decrease compared to the 230 neonatal deaths recorded during the same period in 2025. Reducing neonatal mortality is a key indicator of overall healthcare system performance, as these deaths are often preventable with adequate prenatal care, skilled birth attendance, and access to neonatal intensive care.

Maternal Mortality Data

In contrast to the infant mortality figures, the Dominican Republic has not reported any maternal deaths for the most recent week. The cumulative total of maternal deaths in 2026 stands at 11, which is also a decrease compared to the 17 deaths reported in the same period of 2025. Maternal mortality rates are closely linked to access to quality prenatal care, safe delivery services, and postpartum care. A decline in maternal deaths suggests improvements in these areas, although continued vigilance is crucial.

Respiratory Virus Activity

Alongside monitoring mortality rates, the Ministry of Public Health is also tracking the ongoing transmission of respiratory viruses. The report indicates continued activity of influenza A (H3N2), alongside influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and influenza B Victoria strains. Adenovirus and metapneumovirus are also circulating. While the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) shows a slight decrease, it remains present. This complex interplay of viruses suggests sustained transmission, potentially impacting demand for healthcare services, particularly among vulnerable populations. The World Health Organization provides detailed information on influenza strains and their global impact.

Dengue Fever Surveillance

The National Epidemiological Surveillance System (Sinave) reported 23 suspected cases of dengue fever in the latest week, with one confirmed case and no deaths or severe cases. To date, the country has reported a cumulative total of 313 suspected cases and 35 confirmed cases. Barahona and Santiago Rodríguez are currently reporting the highest numbers of suspected cases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers comprehensive information on dengue fever, including symptoms, prevention, and treatment.

Leptospirosis and Malaria Updates

Four cases of leptospirosis were reported in week 7, including one confirmed case and one death. The cumulative total for 2026 is 40 suspected cases and 24 confirmed cases, with the majority of cases concentrated in San José de Ocoa and Montecristi. Public Health officials explain that these provinces, with their smaller populations, tend to amplify case rates due to localized transmission hotspots linked to environmental factors like recent rainfall, stagnant water, and agricultural activities.

Malaria cases, conversely, show an increase in suspected cases compared to the same period in 2025, while confirmed cases have decreased from 191 to 23. This discrepancy may reflect changes in diagnostic testing or reporting practices, and requires further investigation.

Public Health Response and Ongoing Vigilance

In response to these health challenges, the Ministry of Public Health emphasizes its commitment to strengthening epidemiological surveillance, promoting vaccination campaigns, and ensuring diagnostic and hospital capacity. The ongoing monitoring of these various infectious diseases and mortality rates is crucial for informing public health interventions and protecting the population. The Ministry highlights that the hospitals reporting the highest numbers of cases – Centro Médico Oriental, Hospital Materno Doctor Reynaldo Almánzar, and others listed in the report – serve as key referral centers for complex cases, necessitating continuous technical analysis of clinical, social, and organizational factors. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) provides regional support and resources for public health initiatives in the Americas.

The situation requires continued attention and a proactive approach to public health management. Further analysis of the data, coupled with targeted interventions, will be essential to reduce infant and maternal mortality rates and control the spread of infectious diseases in the Dominican Republic. Individuals are encouraged to stay informed about official public health updates and consult with qualified healthcare professionals for any health concerns.
