Fuentes & Nasif Launch Flu Vaccination Drive for Seniors in Taiwan

March 18, 2026 Nkechi Okonkwo- Health Editor Health

The city of Fuentes and Minister Natividad Nassif have launched a flu vaccination campaign specifically targeting residents of retirement centers, marking a key step in protecting vulnerable populations as the 2026 flu season approaches. The initiative, which began this week, aims to increase vaccination rates among seniors, a group particularly susceptible to severe complications from influenza.

Protecting a Vulnerable Population

The vaccination drive was formally initiated at the “Mama Antula” long-stay residence, led by Minister Nassif. This location was chosen to underscore the campaign’s focus on providing accessible healthcare to those in long-term care facilities. The flu vaccine is now available at hospitals and health centers across the region, with a particular emphasis on reaching high-risk individuals. This includes not only residents of facilities like “Mama Antula,” but also individuals with underlying health conditions, pregnant women, healthcare workers and young children.

Minister Nassif was joined by Ángel Nicolle, the Minister of Social Development, who emphasized the importance of vaccination in preventing the impact of respiratory viruses and controlling the spread of a new strain of influenza A (H3N2). Also present were Gustavo Zabalza, the Minister of Health; Pedro Carrizo, Director of the Infant and Young Mothers Program; Florencia Coronel, Head of Vaccination; Marta Tarhini, Director of APS; and Ramiro Banco, Deputy Minister of Social Development. The collaborative presence of these officials highlights the multi-sectoral approach being taken to address public health concerns.

Understanding the Flu Vaccine and its Availability

The vaccine is recommended for children aged 6 to 24 months, healthcare personnel, individuals over 65 years of age, pregnant women, and postpartum women within 10 days of leaving maternity hospitals (if not vaccinated during pregnancy). Crucially, anyone with underlying risk factors is also eligible. The vaccine is available at public hospitals, health centers, and vaccination centers, and can be administered concurrently with other vaccines, according to Minister Nassif. This flexibility is intended to streamline the vaccination process and maximize coverage.

Florencia Coronel, Head of Vaccination, stressed the importance of coordination between different levels of the health system to ensure greater immunity for high-risk groups, prevent complications and severe cases, and reduce the impact of the disease on the healthcare system. This coordinated approach is vital for maximizing the effectiveness of the vaccination campaign.

The Importance of Annual Flu Vaccination

Influenza viruses are constantly evolving, which is why annual vaccination is crucial. The flu vaccine is formulated each year to protect against the strains that are predicted to be most prevalent in the upcoming season. The World Health Organization (WHO) plays a key role in monitoring influenza activity globally and recommending vaccine compositions. The WHO provides detailed information on seasonal influenza, including its impact and prevention strategies.

While the flu vaccine is highly effective, it’s not 100% foolproof. Vaccine effectiveness can vary depending on factors such as the match between the vaccine strains and circulating viruses, as well as the individual’s age and health status. Still, even if vaccinated individuals do contract the flu, their illness is typically milder and less likely to result in serious complications like pneumonia or hospitalization. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers comprehensive resources on understanding flu vaccines and their effectiveness.

Beyond Vaccination: Additional Preventative Measures

In addition to vaccination, several other measures can help prevent the spread of influenza. These include practicing good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing with soap and water, covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and managing stress, can also help boost the immune system and reduce the risk of infection.

Public Health Surveillance and Future Guidance

Ongoing surveillance of influenza activity is essential for monitoring the effectiveness of the vaccination campaign and identifying any emerging trends. Health authorities continuously track flu cases, hospitalizations, and deaths to assess the impact of the virus and adjust public health recommendations accordingly. This surveillance data informs future vaccine development and helps to refine vaccination strategies.

The Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection also emphasizes the importance of vaccination and provides detailed information on their vaccination programs. Their website offers resources on seasonal flu vaccination and other immunization initiatives.

As the flu season progresses, public health officials will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed. Individuals are encouraged to stay informed about the latest recommendations and consult with their healthcare providers for personalized advice.
