HIV/AIDS Education Reaches Papua Students: Awareness & Prevention Efforts

HIV/AIDS Education Reaches Papua Students: Awareness & Prevention Efforts

March 2, 2026 Nkechi Okonkwo- Health Editor Health

The Papua Provincial AIDS Commission (KPA) recently conducted outreach and education sessions on HIV/AIDS for students residing at the Biak Numfor Student Dormitory in Jayapura. The initiative, held on March 1st, 2026, involved volunteer AIDS advocates and public health students from Cenderawasih University, reaching approximately 35 students.

Reaching a Critical Population

Amanda Frilanda Wally, Coordinator of the Papua Provincial Volunteer AIDS Care, emphasized the importance of engaging students in HIV/AIDS awareness efforts. “Students are agents of change, an educated generation with a strategic role in raising awareness, shaping healthy behaviors and combating stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV),” Wally stated. This outreach reflects a broader strategy to address the ongoing challenge of HIV/AIDS in Papua, a region with a significant burden of the disease.

The KPA’s focus on students is particularly relevant, as they represent a demographic capable of disseminating information and influencing community norms. The program aims not only to increase knowledge about HIV/AIDS but as well to foster social responsibility and empathy towards those affected. HIV/AIDS is not solely a health issue, Wally explained, but also a social, economic, and humanitarian concern.

Papua’s HIV/AIDS Landscape

As of December 31, 2025, Papua province had recorded 3,630 cases of HIV/AIDS, highlighting the continued need for preventative measures and support services. This figure underscores the vulnerability of certain regions within Papua, including coastal and island areas like Biak Numfor. Elshinta News reported on the event, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the epidemic.

Understanding the broader context of HIV/AIDS in Indonesia is crucial. According to the UNAIDS, Indonesia has made significant progress in reducing new HIV infections, but challenges remain, particularly among key populations. These populations include people who inject drugs, men who have sex with men, sex workers, and transgender people. Geographic disparities also exist, with Papua consistently reporting higher HIV prevalence rates than other provinces.

Understanding HIV and AIDS: A Primer

HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, attacks the body’s immune system, making it difficult to fight off infections. The virus doesn’t immediately cause symptoms; it can remain dormant for years. However, if left untreated, HIV can progress to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), a life-threatening condition.

Symptoms of AIDS typically emerge when the immune system is severely compromised. These can include persistent fever, chronic diarrhea, tuberculosis (TB), recurrent malaria, skin rashes, and fungal infections. Early detection and treatment with antiretroviral therapy (ART) are critical for managing HIV and preventing progression to AIDS. ART doesn’t cure HIV, but it can suppress the virus to undetectable levels, allowing people with HIV to live long and healthy lives and preventing transmission to others.

The Role of Education and Community Engagement

Wally expressed hope that the students who participated in the KPA’s outreach program will grow advocates for HIV/AIDS awareness within their communities. She encouraged them to share accurate information with their peers, families, and broader social networks. The KPA is open to collaborating with students, including those from the Biak Numfor dormitory, on future educational initiatives.

One potential avenue for collaboration is study tours to Biak Numfor, which could incorporate HIV/AIDS education, peer educator training, and community-based prevention campaigns. This approach aligns with the principles of community engagement, which recognizes the importance of involving local stakeholders in the design and implementation of public health programs.

Cenderawasih University’s Commitment to Student Wellbeing

The involvement of public health students from Cenderawasih University (UNCEN) in the KPA’s outreach program demonstrates the university’s commitment to student wellbeing and community service. UNCEN has been actively involved in various initiatives, including the distribution of student financial aid and the hosting of inspirational lectures featuring prominent figures like the Acting Governor of Papua. The university’s recent graduation ceremony saw 508 students receive their degrees, further contributing to the skilled workforce in the region.

Looking Ahead: Strengthening HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care in Papua

The KPA’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS are a vital component of Papua’s broader public health strategy. Continued investment in prevention programs, testing services, and treatment access is essential to curbing the epidemic. Strengthening collaboration between government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and community groups will also be crucial.

Further research is needed to understand the specific drivers of HIV transmission in Papua and to tailor interventions accordingly. Addressing social determinants of health, such as poverty, inequality, and stigma, is also critical. The Papua Provincial Government, under the leadership of Governor Lukas Enembe (as of 2021, according to Papua.go.id), has demonstrated a commitment to combating HIV/AIDS through the establishment of the KPA and the appointment of its leadership. Sustained political will and financial resources will be essential to achieving lasting progress.

Individuals concerned about HIV/AIDS are encouraged to consult with healthcare professionals for accurate information and testing options. Reliable resources are also available from national and international health organizations, such as the Indonesian Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization.
