Madiun: Dengue Cases Rise – Health Dept Conducts Fogging in Patihan District

Madiun: Dengue Cases Rise – Health Dept Conducts Fogging in Patihan District

Dengue Fever Cases Prompt Fogging in Madiun’s Patihan District

Public health officials in Madiun, Indonesia are taking steps to control a localized increase in dengue fever cases, with fogging operations recently completed in the Patihan district. The measures follow the identification of cases, including a four-month-old infant and are part of a broader effort to prevent further spread of the mosquito-borne illness. This response highlights the ongoing challenges of dengue control, particularly during peak rainy seasons, and the importance of community involvement in preventative measures.

Recent Cases and Local Response

The Dinas Kesehatan (Health Office) of Madiun City initiated fogging in the Jalan Ksatria area of Kelurahan Patihan (RT 16 RW 5) after detecting cases of dengue fever. According to Anjasmoro, the head of Patihan, several residents were diagnosed with the illness, including a four-month-old baby. Whereas all those infected have reportedly recovered, the local authorities are acting proactively to mitigate further transmission. Fogging, a method of dispersing insecticides to kill adult mosquitoes, is being conducted in two cycles, with the first taking place on March 3, 2026, and the second on March 10, 2026.

Epidemiological Investigation and Findings

The fogging operations are directly linked to findings from an epidemiological investigation conducted by the Puskesmas Ngegong (Ngegong Community Health Center). Neva Chandra Suroto, Head of the Provision of Health Services at the Madiun City Health, Population Control and Family Planning Office, explained that the investigation, completed on March 2, 2026, revealed one confirmed dengue case, three individuals presenting with fever, and the presence of Aedes aegypti larvae in one out of twenty inspected water storage containers. Dinkes Kota Madiun reported a total of 191 cases of dengue fever in the city, with two fatalities as of January 31, 2026.

Dengue Fever: Understanding the Illness

Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Aedes aegypti and, to a lesser extent, Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. These mosquitoes are active during the day, increasing the risk of transmission when people are typically active outdoors. Symptoms typically appear 4-10 days after the bite and can range from mild fever and headache to severe joint and muscle pain (hence the nickname “breakbone fever”). In some cases, dengue can develop into a more severe form, known as dengue hemorrhagic fever, which can be life-threatening. There is currently no specific medication to treat dengue infection; treatment focuses on managing symptoms and preventing dehydration. The World Health Organization (WHO) provides comprehensive information on dengue fever, its symptoms, and prevention.

Beyond Fogging: A Multi-Pronged Approach

While fogging targets adult mosquitoes, health officials emphasize that it is only one component of a comprehensive dengue control strategy. The Dinas Kesehatan is urging residents to actively participate in mosquito breeding site reduction through the “3M Plus” program: draining (menguras) water storage containers, covering (menutup) containers, and burying (menimbun) discarded items that can collect water. Local authorities are similarly encouraging regular community clean-up efforts (kerja bakti) to eliminate potential breeding grounds.

Community Cooperation and Public Health Guidance

Effective fogging relies on community cooperation. Residents are advised to open doors and windows to allow insecticide to reach indoor mosquito resting places, protect food from contamination, and temporarily relocate vulnerable individuals – infants, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions – during the process. Officials also highlight that Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are most active between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM and between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM, advising increased vigilance during these peak biting hours.

Current Dengue Situation in Madiun

As of March 9, 2026, Madiun City has recorded eight confirmed dengue fever cases since the beginning of January, spread across several kelurahan (villages): Mojorejo, Demangan, Taman, Josenan, Nambangan Lor, Ngegong, Kelun, and Patihan. Sinergia Mediatama reports that cases in Madiun County have been increasing with the peak of the rainy season. The local government is appealing to the public to remain vigilant and prioritize environmental cleanliness to minimize the risk of further outbreaks.

Looking Ahead: Surveillance and Continued Prevention

The Dinas Kesehatan will continue to monitor dengue cases closely through ongoing surveillance and epidemiological investigations. This includes analyzing trends, identifying high-risk areas, and adapting control strategies as needed. Public health education campaigns will also be sustained to raise awareness about dengue prevention and encourage community participation. The effectiveness of the current interventions will be evaluated, and further measures may be implemented based on the evolving situation. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about official public health updates and consult with healthcare professionals if they experience symptoms consistent with dengue fever.
