Measles Cases in Indonesia Decline to 511 Amid Immunization Efforts (2026)

Measles Cases in Indonesia Decline to 511 Amid Immunization Efforts (2026)

March 13, 2026 Nkechi Okonkwo- Health Editor Health

Indonesia is seeing a decline in measles cases, dropping to 511 in week 9 of 2026, down from 531 the previous week. This positive trend is attributed to widespread immunization efforts and public health education campaigns promoting hygiene and preventative health practices across the archipelago. The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) reports that both Outbreak Response Immunization (ORI) and “catch-up” campaigns – designed to reach children who may have missed routine vaccinations – are proving effective.

Plt. Director General of Disease Control at Kemenkes, Dr. Andi Saguni, emphasized the highly contagious nature of measles, noting that one infected person can transmit the virus to 12-18 others, particularly among unvaccinated infants. While cases in adults are less common, they do occur. “For measles immunization, there are two basic doses, at 9 months and 18 months. After the first dose at 9 months, coverage provides around 80 percent protection. But after the second dose at 18 months, that increases to 97 percent,” Dr. Saguni explained.

Understanding Measles Transmission and Immunity

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The World Health Organization (WHO) details the severity of the disease, noting that it can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis (brain swelling), and even death. The virus remains airborne for several hours and on surfaces for up to two hours, making it easily transmissible in crowded settings.

The two-dose vaccination schedule recommended by Kemenkes aligns with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines. The first dose builds initial immunity, while the second dose ensures a robust and lasting immune response, providing near-complete protection against the virus. The increased protection after the second dose is crucial, as even a slight percentage of unvaccinated individuals can contribute to outbreaks.

Targeted Immunization and Mudik Preparedness

To further curb the spread of measles, Kemenkes is collaborating with local health departments and quarantine facilities to offer measles vaccinations at various mudik (pre-Eid al-Fitr travel) checkpoints, alongside free health checks. This proactive approach aims to protect travelers and prevent the further dissemination of the virus during the traditionally high-mobility period.

Dr. Saguni urged parents and guardians to monitor their children for symptoms – including fever, cough, runny nose, and conjunctivitis – before traveling for Lebaran. “If there are symptoms that suggest measles, immediately take the child to a health facility for examination,” he advised. Delaying travel until the child has recovered is also recommended, given the virus’s high transmissibility.

National Immunization Targets and Progress

Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin has set a target of achieving 95 percent measles immunization coverage before Idul Fitri 1447 Hijriah/Lebaran 2026. Initial reports indicate promising progress, with vaccinations underway in 50 districts and cities. The urgency stems from the increased risk of transmission during mudik, when large numbers of people travel across the country.

As of March 11, 2026, Katadata reported 45 outbreaks of measles across 29 districts/cities in 11 provinces, resulting in six deaths. This underscores the importance of rapid response and comprehensive immunization strategies.

Outbreak Response Immunization (ORI) and Catch-Up Campaigns

The Indonesian government’s response to the recent measles surge involves two key strategies: ORI and catch-up campaigns. ORI is implemented in areas experiencing outbreaks, targeting vulnerable populations with immediate vaccination. Catch-up campaigns, are conducted in regions with elevated risk, aiming to immunize children who have missed their scheduled vaccinations. These campaigns are guided by technical guidelines outlined in the Petunjuk Teknis Penyelenggaraan Outbreak Response Immunization (ORI) published by the Ministry of Health in 2024.

Looking Ahead: Sustaining Immunization Efforts

The Ministry of Health’s commitment to increasing immunization coverage is a critical step in protecting the Indonesian population from measles. Continued surveillance, rapid response to outbreaks, and sustained public health education are essential to maintaining this progress. The success of the current immunization campaigns will be closely monitored in the coming weeks, with a focus on achieving the 95 percent coverage target before Lebaran. Further updates on measles cases and immunization efforts will be provided by Kemenkes as they become available. Individuals concerned about measles exposure or vaccination status should consult with their healthcare provider.
