Measles Cases Rise in Coahuila, Mexico: Vaccination Efforts Intensify

Measles Cases Rise in Coahuila, Mexico: Vaccination Efforts Intensify

March 12, 2026 Nkechi Okonkwo- Health Editor Health

Health officials in Coahuila, Mexico, are monitoring a rise in measles cases, with two new confirmed infections bringing the total for the year to seven as of March 10, 2026. Alongside the increase in confirmed cases, the number of suspected cases under investigation has also grown, from 98 to 115, indicating that 17 additional individuals are awaiting laboratory results to determine if they have contracted the disease. This situation underscores the ongoing challenges in maintaining measles elimination efforts in the region and nationally.

Understanding the Current Outbreak in Coahuila

The Coahuila Health Secretariat is actively tracking the spread of measles, a highly contagious viral illness. Although the locations and health status of the two recently detected patients haven’t been publicly released, authorities are continuing to monitor the five previously confirmed cases. Four patients in San Pedro are reported to be stable and in the final stages of the illness, and a baby under two years old in Saltillo is also recovering. Importantly, Coahuila has not yet reported any deaths related to measles during this outbreak.

This localized increase occurs within a broader national context. As of March 10, 2026, Mexico has recorded a cumulative total of 6,511 confirmed measles cases and seven fatalities. The deaths have been distributed across several states: Jalisco (two cases), and one each in Tlaxcala, Durango, Sinaloa, Guerrero, and Michoacán. The Secretaría de Salud is actively working to contain the spread and prevent further complications.

Who is Most Vulnerable?

Epidemiological data reveals that the highest incidence of measles is currently observed in infants under one year of age, followed by children between one and four years old, and then those aged five to nine. However, cases have also been reported in adults and older adults, highlighting the importance of vaccination across all age groups. Measles is particularly dangerous for young children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Measles is spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It’s so contagious that if one person has it, 90% of those around who aren’t immune will also become infected. Symptoms typically begin with a fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. A characteristic rash then appears, starting on the face and spreading down the body. Complications can include ear infections, pneumonia, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), and even death.

Vaccination: The Primary Defense

Health authorities in Coahuila are emphasizing that measles is a preventable disease through vaccination. They are urging parents to ensure their children receive all recommended doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Adults under 49 years of age who are unsure of their immunization status are also encouraged to secure vaccinated. The MMR vaccine is highly effective, providing approximately 97% protection against measles after two doses.

To improve access to vaccination, the Coahuila Health Secretariat has extended the operating hours of vaccination modules in General Hospitals across the state until 7:00 PM. Mobile vaccination units have also been deployed to communities, schools, and shopping centers. You can find specific vaccination locations through the official vaccination platform, which lists over 21,000 points of vaccination throughout Mexico.

National Response and Surveillance

The federal government’s response to the increasing measles cases includes enhanced surveillance, vaccination campaigns, and public awareness initiatives. The Secretaría de Salud launched the digital platform “Dónde me vacuno” (Where to vaccinate me) to help people locate vaccination sites easily. This platform integrates data from various healthcare providers, including IMSS, IMSS-Bienestar, ISSSTE, and state health secretariats, ensuring up-to-date information on vaccine availability and schedules.

Ramiro López Elizalde, Undersecretary of Policies and Welfare, highlighted the platform as a key component of the national strategy to ensure access to the measles vaccine for those who need it. The government is also working to increase vaccination coverage rates, particularly among vulnerable populations.

What to Expect Moving Forward

The situation with measles in Coahuila and across Mexico requires continued vigilance and a proactive public health response. Authorities will likely continue to monitor case numbers closely, investigate suspected cases promptly, and implement targeted vaccination campaigns. The effectiveness of these efforts will depend on maintaining high vaccination coverage rates and ensuring equitable access to vaccines for all populations. Individuals should stay informed about the latest updates from official health sources and consult with a healthcare professional if they have concerns about measles or vaccination.
