Researchers found that OEA supplementation was associated with a significant enrichment of Akkermansia muciniphila, a bacterium increasingly recognized for its health-promoting properties. They too observed an increase in Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, another beneficial gut microbe known for producing butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid that nourishes the cells lining the colon.
Akkermansia muciniphila is of particular interest. This bacterium resides in the mucus layer of the gut and plays a role in maintaining the integrity of the intestinal barrier. According to research published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, its abundance is often inversely correlated with body mass index (BMI), type 1 diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease. A healthy intestinal barrier prevents the leakage of harmful substances into the bloodstream, reducing systemic inflammation. The study also noted increases in occludin, a protein crucial for tight junctions between intestinal cells, further supporting the idea of improved gut barrier function.

OEA is produced naturally in the small intestine in response to dietary fat. The OEA used in the study, branded as Trpti, was originally developed by Gencor.
