Pekalongan City Encourages Complete Immunization: Protect Your Child from Measles & Rubella

Pekalongan City Encourages Complete Immunization: Protect Your Child from Measles & Rubella

March 10, 2026 Nkechi Okonkwo- Health Editor Health

Kota Pekalongan, Indonesia – Health officials in Kota Pekalongan are reinforcing the importance of complete childhood immunization, with a particular focus on the Measles and Rubella (MR) vaccine. The Dinas Kesehatan (Kota Pekalongan Health Office) is actively encouraging parents to ensure their children receive the full MR immunization schedule to prevent these potentially serious infectious diseases.

The push for comprehensive immunization comes as a proactive measure to safeguard children against complications arising from measles and rubella. These viral illnesses are highly contagious, particularly among young children who haven’t developed sufficient immunity.

Protecting Pekalongan’s Children: The Importance of MR Immunization

According to Puji Winarti, Head of the Kota Pekalongan Health Office, the MR vaccine is a cornerstone of the government’s long-standing program to protect children from preventable infectious diseases. “Imunisasi MR ini sangat penting karena campak merupakan penyakit yang disebabkan oleh virus dan penularannya sangat cepat di masyarakat, khususnya pada anak-anak. With complete MR vaccination, we can prevent children from the risk of severe illness and even death due to complications from measles,” Winarti stated on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

Measles, a highly contagious viral infection, spreads rapidly, especially in populations with low immunity. The virus causes fever, cough, runny nose, and a characteristic rash. Complications can include ear infections, pneumonia, and, in rare cases, encephalitis (brain swelling). Rubella, while often milder, poses a significant risk to pregnant women, potentially causing serious birth defects.

The MR Immunization Schedule: A Lifelong Shield

The recommended MR immunization schedule in Kota Pekalongan aligns with national guidelines. The first dose is administered to infants at 9 months of age, followed by a booster dose at 18 months. A further dose is given when the child enters primary school, typically in the first grade. This multi-stage approach ensures sustained immunity throughout childhood.

Puskesmas Medono, a local health center, exemplifies the proactive approach to immunization. Happy Ika Fatmawati, Head of UPT Puskesmas Medono, explained that MR vaccinations are routinely offered both within the clinic and through outreach programs. “Program pemberian vaksin MR ini merupakan program pemerintah sebagai bagian dari imunisasi dasar lengkap yang sudah berjalan sejak lama,” she said. The clinic schedules vaccinations twice weekly and actively participates in community-based immunization events, such as those held at posyandu (integrated health posts).

Reaching Every Child: Innovative Outreach Programs

To improve immunization coverage, Puskesmas Medono has launched an innovative program called LINCAH (Lengkapi Imunisasi Cegah Penyakit Pada Anak), which translates to “Complete Immunization to Prevent Disease in Children.” This initiative involves health workers actively visiting communities to provide vaccinations at convenient locations, making it easier for parents to access this vital service. The Dinas Kesehatan Kota Pekalongan supports these local efforts to enhance accessibility.

These outreach efforts are proving successful. As of 2026, Puskesmas Medono has not reported any cases of measles within its service area. “Alhamdulillah sampai bulan ini di tahun 2026 untuk wilayah Puskesmas Medono belum ada temuan kasus campak,” Fatmawati confirmed. Though, she emphasized that continued vigilance and immunization remain crucial for maintaining this positive outcome.

Recognizing the Symptoms: Early Detection is Key

Understanding the symptoms of measles is essential for prompt diagnosis and management. Common signs include high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. In some cases, measles can also cause diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration, particularly in young children. The World Health Organization (WHO) provides comprehensive information on measles symptoms and complications.

Dehydration poses a serious threat to infants and young children. If left untreated, severe dehydration can be life-threatening. Parents should seek immediate medical attention if their child exhibits signs of dehydration, such as decreased urination, dry mouth, and sunken eyes.

Parental Confidence and Community Support

Nabila, a parent who recently brought her 18-month-ancient child to Puskesmas Medono for MR immunization, expressed her satisfaction with the service. “Alhamdulillah pelayanannya bagus. Dilayani sesuai jamnya, bidannya juga ramah dan memberikan edukasi kepada kami sebagai orang tua,” she shared. Her experience reflects the positive impact of accessible and supportive immunization services.

The commitment to universal health coverage (UHC) in Kota Pekalongan, as highlighted in recent reports, underscores the city’s dedication to ensuring all residents have access to essential healthcare services, including immunization.

Looking Ahead: Sustaining Immunization Efforts

The Dinas Kesehatan Kota Pekalongan is committed to ongoing monitoring and evaluation of immunization coverage. This includes tracking vaccination rates, identifying areas with low coverage, and implementing targeted interventions to reach underserved populations. The city also continues to support innovation in service delivery, such as the LINCAH program, to improve accessibility and convenience.

Officials emphasize that maintaining high immunization rates is a collective responsibility. Parents, healthcare providers, and community leaders all play a vital role in protecting children from preventable diseases. By working together, Kota Pekalongan can ensure a healthier future for its youngest residents.
