Stem Cell Therapy for Heart Failure: New Biotech Ibnova Therapeutics Launched

A new international biotech company, Ibnova Therapeutics, has launched with the aim of accelerating the development of stem cell therapies for both children and adults living with heart disease. The company, born from collaborative research between institutions in Australia and Denmark, anticipates initiating human clinical trials within the next three to five years.

The foundation for Ibnova Therapeutics stems from pioneering work conducted by the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) in Melbourne and QIMR Berghofer in Brisbane. This research is significantly supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Stem Cell Medicine (reNEW), headquartered in Copenhagen, with research nodes extending to the University of Copenhagen, Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands, and MCRI. MCRI serves as a key partner in this global effort.

Ibnova Therapeutics is based in Denmark and benefits from the backing of two key initiatives: the BioInnovation Institute (BII) Venture Lab program and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Cellerator. These programs are specifically designed to help researchers translate scientific breakthroughs into tangible therapies. The BII Venture Lab will provide early-stage funding and business development support, while the Novo Nordisk Foundation Cellerator will focus on the complex task of manufacturing the engineered heart tissue required for therapeutic applications.

Restoring Heart Function Through Lab-Grown Muscle

The company will focus on advancing and commercializing stem cell-based treatments for heart failure, building on the work of MCRI Professor Enzo Porrello and QIMR Berghofer Professor James Hudson. Their research has demonstrated the potential of lab-grown human heart muscle to restore cardiac function following a heart attack. Crucially, this approach has similarly shown promising safety and efficacy results in animal models, paving the way for human trials. The team’s success includes cardiac surgeons and cardiologists from Melbourne’s The Royal Children’s Hospital and The Alfred Hospital.

Heart failure is a serious, life-threatening condition affecting over 60 million people worldwide, where the heart is unable to pump sufficient blood to meet the body’s needs. Currently, a heart transplant remains the only definitive treatment for end-stage heart failure. However, a critical barrier to this treatment is the severe shortage of available donor organs. QIMR Berghofer’s involvement highlights the potential for collaborative research to address significant unmet medical needs.

Andrew Laskary, Executive Director, Chief Scientific Officer, and Co-Founder of Ibnova Therapeutics, emphasized the company’s commitment to bringing these cellular therapies to patients as quickly and safely as possible. “With Ibnova, People can now bridge the hardest gap in medicine by turning breakthrough biology into a clinical-ready therapy,” he stated. “By combining Australia’s discovery engine with Denmark’s translational ecosystem, we’re building a focused path to first-in-human trials by aligning manufacturing readiness, regulatory strategy and clinical partnerships.”

A Decade of Research Underpins the New Venture

The intellectual property that underpins Ibnova Therapeutics is the result of substantial investment from reNEW, which enabled MCRI researchers to progress their early-stage discoveries. This stem cell research has also benefited from over a decade of funding from the Australian Research Council, the Medical Research Future Fund, and the National Health and Medical Research Council, demonstrating a long-term commitment to this area of research.

Professor Porrello, also a Co-Founder of Ibnova Therapeutics, underscored the importance of sustained investment in transformative technologies and the crucial role of industry partnerships in enabling advanced manufacturing and clinical trials. “We are incredibly excited to announce the launch of Ibnova Therapeutics and move our stem cell technology towards clinical trials,” he said. “This would not have been possible without the support of reNEW and our Novo Nordisk Foundation ecosystem partners in Denmark including the Cellerator and the BioInnovation Institute.”

Professor Hudson, also an Ibnova Therapeutics Co-Founder, explained that the technology is built upon more than ten years of research focused on creating multicellular bioengineered tissues. He emphasized that the fundamental science behind this technology is critical to its substantial improvement in heart function.

The Role of reNEW in Translational Research

Professor Melissa Little, MCRI Chief Scientist and reNEW CEO, highlighted the center’s mission: “The mission of reNEW is to move the particularly best stem cell science through to the development of new therapies. The formation of Ibnova Therapeutics from the research in the Australian node is precisely what we aim to achieve.” This statement underscores the importance of bridging the gap between basic scientific discovery and clinical application.

The development of these stem cell therapies represents a significant step forward in the treatment of heart failure. While a heart transplant remains the gold standard for severe cases, the limited availability of donor organs necessitates the exploration of alternative treatments. Stem cell therapy offers a potentially scalable and personalized approach to restoring heart function, offering hope to millions affected by this debilitating condition. The success of Ibnova Therapeutics will depend on navigating the complexities of clinical trials, regulatory approval, and large-scale manufacturing, but the initial findings and the strong partnerships in place suggest a promising future for this innovative therapy.
