World Kidney Day: Goiás Clinics Promote Health & Early Diagnosis
The Policlínicas Estaduais de Posse and Formosa, Goiás state-run clinics, recently concluded a series of health awareness activities timed to coincide with World Kidney Day on March 13th. These initiatives aimed to educate patients, their families, and healthcare professionals about kidney health, early detection of kidney disease, and preventative measures. The clinics, managed by the Instituto de Medicina, Estudos e Desenvolvimento (Imed), have become regional hubs for renal care, offering both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis services.
This year’s World Kidney Day theme, “Caring for people and protecting the planet: urine and creatinine testing for all,” underscored the importance of simple, accessible tests for identifying early signs of kidney dysfunction. The campaign included informational sessions, light exercise demonstrations, and opportunities for patients to share experiences – fostering a supportive environment focused on proactive health management.
Expanding Access to Renal Care in Goiás
The Polyclinic of Formosa began offering hemodialysis services in 2022, currently providing over 144 weekly sessions. Operating Monday through Saturday across three daily shifts, the clinic accommodates eight patients per session, totaling approximately 24 patients daily. The Polyclinic of Posse, established in 2021, currently supports 68 patients undergoing hemodialysis, completing more than 800 sessions each month. It serves a broader regional population, drawing patients from over 31 municipalities in the Nordeste II macro-region. Both clinics are notable for being pioneers in offering peritoneal dialysis within the state network, providing patients with a more flexible treatment option that can be administered at home with ongoing professional support.
The Silent Threat of Chronic Kidney Disease
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) often progresses without noticeable symptoms in its early stages, making early detection crucial. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 10% of the global population lives with some degree of CKD. Left undiagnosed and untreated, CKD can lead to serious complications, including kidney failure, cardiovascular disease, and increased mortality. Risk factors for developing CKD include hypertension (high blood pressure) and diabetes, highlighting the importance of regular medical check-ups and proactive management of these conditions. The simple urine and creatinine tests promoted during the campaign are key tools for identifying early indicators of kidney problems.
Beyond Hemodialysis: The Benefits of Peritoneal Dialysis
While hemodialysis, a process where blood is filtered outside the body, remains a common treatment for kidney failure, peritoneal dialysis offers a valuable alternative. This method utilizes the lining of the abdomen (the peritoneum) as a natural filter, allowing patients to perform treatments at home. This increased flexibility can significantly improve quality of life, reducing the burden of frequent trips to dialysis centers. The Polyclínicas of Posse and Formosa’s commitment to offering both modalities demonstrates a dedication to patient-centered care, providing options tailored to individual needs and lifestyles.
Patient Perspectives: The Impact of Comprehensive Care
The impact of these initiatives extends beyond medical interventions. Amanda Thiele, a hemodialysis patient at the Posse Polyclinic, emphasized the emotional support provided by the healthcare team. “Our lives are full of challenges and fears, and having a team that cares about our well-being makes all the difference,” she shared. Luana Martins Silva de Souza, the medical director of the hemodialysis service at the Formosa Polyclinic, echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of comprehensive care and patient education. “World Kidney Day is an important moment to reinforce the importance of prevention and early diagnosis of kidney diseases. Many times, changes in kidney function evolve silently, and simple tests, such as creatinine and urine tests, can create all the difference in identifying these changes early.”
What’s Next: Strengthening Renal Health Surveillance and Prevention
The success of these awareness campaigns underscores the demand for continued investment in renal health surveillance and preventative programs. Ongoing efforts will focus on expanding access to early detection testing, particularly in underserved communities. Further research is needed to identify effective strategies for managing risk factors like hypertension and diabetes, and to develop innovative treatments for CKD. The Polyclínicas of Posse and Formosa are poised to play a vital role in these efforts, serving as regional centers of excellence for renal care and education. Individuals concerned about their kidney health should consult with a qualified healthcare professional for personalized advice and screening recommendations.
