March 23, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

Mexico City – Eight Latin American cities have been recognized among the world’s best in 2026, according to a new ranking by Time Out magazine. The list, compiled from a survey of over 24,000 people across 150 cities and the assessments of more than 100 Time Out experts, highlights destinations offering a compelling mix of culture, gastronomy, and community spirit. Leading the way for the region is Mexico City, securing the seventh position overall.

The ranking places Rio de Janeiro at number 12, followed by São Paulo at 14, Guadalajara at 18, Medellín at 35, Lima at 36, Buenos Aires at 43, and Bogotá at 50. Time Out’s assessment of Latin American cities emphasizes the strength of their culinary scenes, vibrant cultural life, strong neighborhood identities, and a palpable sense of community. The upcoming FIFA World Cup, alongside various art festivals and cultural openings, is also cited as a contributing factor to the region’s appeal.

Mexico City

Mexico City’s seventh-place ranking reflects its unique blend of Aztec heritage, contemporary art, and a thriving gastronomic landscape. Time Out specifically highlights the Templo Mayor, museums dedicated to Frida Kahlo, the city’s dynamic nightlife, and the ongoing expansion of Chapultepec Park as key attractions. The city is also preparing to host matches during the 2026 World Cup. According to the survey, 80% of locals positively assessed the city’s food offerings, while 85% praised its independent shops and local producers.

Rio de Janeiro

Securing the 12th spot, Rio de Janeiro is portrayed as a city where the landscape and cultural life are inextricably linked. The evaluation focuses on its iconic beaches, the vibrant samba scene, bustling bars, art galleries, and the energetic atmosphere of its streets. The publication also recently named Rua do Senado as the “coolest” street in the world. The survey data indicates that 79% of respondents feel a sense of community within the city.

São Paulo

São Paulo, ranked 14th, earns its place on the list due to its cultural and economic significance. Time Out points to renowned museums like MASP and the Pinacoteca, a lively nightlife, and one of the world’s most dynamic culinary scenes. The publication also highlights the distinct character of neighborhoods such as Vila Madalena, Jardins, Centro, and Liberdade. The survey found that 88% of locals approve of the city’s gastronomic offerings, and 76% positively evaluated its green spaces.

Guadalajara

Guadalajara, at number 18, stands out for its cultural offerings, bars, restaurants, and proximity to destinations like Tequila and Costa Alegre. The magazine also links the city to the football atmosphere expected during the 2026 World Cup. Notably, 92% of locals reported feeling happy in their city, and 91% expressed joy in their daily lives.

Medellín

Ranked 35th, Medellín is presented as a city that has transitioned from a “hidden gem” to a well-established tourist destination. Time Out highlights the transformation of Comuna 13, the creative district of Perpetuo Socorro, and the rise of Provenza as a nightlife hub. The arrival of events like the Electric Daisy Carnival and the opening of a new arena in Sabaneta are also mentioned. Survey data shows that 91% of respondents like their neighborhood, and 94% rated the city’s food scene highly.

Lima

Lima, in the 36th position, is recognized primarily for its cuisine. Time Out asserts that the Peruvian capital brings together gastronomic traditions from across the country, serving as a major culinary convergence point. The Costa Verde, ancient huacas (archaeological sites), and the renovation of the Puente de los Suspiros (Bridge of Sighs) are also noted. According to the publication, 80% of locals value the city’s food, and Lima received an 85% rating for affordability of food and beverages.

Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires, at number 43, is described as a complete city experience. Time Out’s report highlights its parrillas (grill restaurants), bodegones (traditional eateries), theaters, art fairs, concerts, and neighborhoods with distinct personalities, including Villa Devoto and San Telmo. The publication also anticipates a special atmosphere during the World Cup, with lively bars and celebrations throughout the city. Survey data indicates that 61% of respondents found the city simple to walk around, and 70% approved of its green spaces.

Bogotá

Closing the ranking at number 50, Bogotá was included for its gastronomic and cultural scene. Time Out highlights that the Colombian capital concentrates some of the country’s best restaurants and a unique nightlife, with venues like Andrés Carne de Res and Theatron. The publication also values its historical and urban art tours. However, the report notes a contrast: while 60% consider the city bicycle-friendly and 59% locate it walkable, only 37% recommend its public transportation.
