A Shift in Leadership: A.A. Raheem Named Thiruvananthapuram District Secretary, V. Joy to Contest from Varkala

തിരുവനന്തപുരം∙ The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM] has appointed A.A. Raheem MP as the new Thiruvananthapuram District Secretary. This decision follows the party’s plan to field incumbent secretary V. Joy in the Varkala constituency for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections. The decision was made at a district secretariat meeting held today in the presence of State Secretary M.V. Govindan.

Raheem currently serves as the All India President of the Democratic Youth Federation of India [DYFI]. Party sources indicated that there was some debate regarding V. Joy’s candidacy, with concerns raised about the potential impact on the party’s chances of retaining the Varkala seat. However, the prevailing view was that Joy’s candidacy was essential to ensure the party’s victory in the constituency.

The CPM had previously approved the names of 10 out of 10 sitting MLAs in the district at a meeting held earlier. The only point of contention was V. Joy’s candidacy. The district-level leadership felt his presence was crucial for maintaining the party’s stronghold in Varkala.

The list of CPM candidates includes: V. Sivan Kutty (Nemom), V. Joy (Varkala), O.S. Ambika (Attingal), D.K. Murali (Vamanapuram), Kadakampally Surendran (Kazhakootam), V.K. Prashant (Vattiyoorkavu), G. Stephen (Aruvikkara), C.K. Hareendran (Parassala), I.B. Sateesh (Kattakada), and K. Ansalan (Neyyattinkara). The candidate list will be submitted to the state committee for approval on March 5th, after which it will be presented to the district and constituency committees for final confirmation.
