AI & Creativity: Why Wisdom Is the New Essential Skill

AI & Creativity: Why Wisdom Is the New Essential Skill

March 16, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

The question of whether creativity alone is enough in an era increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence isn’t a new one, but it’s gaining urgency. Recent conversations with data scientists and AI experts reveal a surprising undercurrent: even those building these powerful tools express a desire to retain their own humanity and sense of wonder. This isn’t simply about technological advancement; it’s about ensuring that innovation serves the greater good, and increasingly, experts are pointing to the importance of wisdom as a guiding force.

The Role of Wisdom in Shaping Creative Output

While creativity focuses on generating novel and useful ideas, wisdom, according to neuropsychiatrist Dilip Jeste, encompasses prosocial attitudes, self-awareness, emotional stability coupled with happiness, sound decision-making, and the ability to navigate uncertainty. Wisdom isn’t typically associated with the fast-paced world of innovation, but emerging research suggests it may be crucial in determining whether creativity benefits society or serves purely individual interests.

A study published in ScienceDirect found that wisdom acts as a moral compass for creativity. Across two experiments, researchers discovered that creativity alone wasn’t a reliable predictor of prosocial behavior. In fact, highly creative individuals who scored lower in wisdom were less willing to help others in a moral dilemma. Conversely, those with higher wisdom scores demonstrated more mindful and socially conscious responses when leveraging their creativity.

This suggests that creativity generates possibilities, while wisdom helps us discern which possibilities align with the well-being of others. As I’ve often described, creativity is the capacity to generate and act on novel solutions to problems we care about. This research adds a critical dimension: ethical foresight and consideration of relational consequences – what we might call “wise creativity.”

Beyond Computation: The Need for Human Qualities

The concern, as voiced by the lead author of the ScienceDirect study, is that human thinking may become increasingly “computationalized” – more procedural, efficiency-driven, and emotionally detached. Despite this trend, people still deeply value genuine human understanding and care. The risk is that as we interact more with computational systems, we may begin to treat complex human problems as merely technical challenges.

So, how do we cultivate wisdom? Ironically, the answer may lie in areas often undervalued today: the humanities. Daniela Amodei, cofounder of Anthropic, recently emphasized the growing importance of humanities education in an AI-driven world. She stated that her company actively seeks candidates with strong communication skills, empathy, curiosity, and an understanding of human behavior – qualities often honed through the study of literature, philosophy, and history. ABC News reported on this shift in hiring priorities.

These disciplines expose us to moral complexities and the nuances of the human experience. As Socrates famously said, “Wisdom begins in wonder.” Wisdom is, perhaps, a deeper expression of that wonder – the ability to pause, reflect, and consider the impact of our actions on others. There are ways to actively nurture this sense of wonder and keep our humanity fully alive.

Cultivating Wise Creativity: Three Practical Approaches

  1. Engage with Human Stories: Read fiction and nonfiction that expands your perspective. Seek out biographies and memoirs of individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Explore fiction with complex, unresolved narratives. As I’ve written about in Tracking Wonder, reading fiction demonstrably enhances brain function and our capacity for empathy.
  2. Practice Perspective-Taking: When making decisions, consider the potential benefits and harms to all stakeholders. If you’re in a leadership role, actively solicit input from others. Ask yourself: who benefits, and who might be negatively affected?
  3. Foster Curiosity About People: Cultivate genuine curiosity about others. This “relational curiosity” or “empathetic curiosity” is a key component of wonder and wisdom, and fosters a sense of human connection. Some organizations are experimenting with “Curiosity Hours” where employees from different departments learn about each other’s work and lives.

Data scientists, entrepreneurs, leaders, and creators now possess unprecedented creative power. The true challenge of our time may be guiding these new ideas with wisdom. In an age of rapidly advancing AI, the most valuable human advantage may be the combination of creative intelligence and a deeply rooted sense of ethical responsibility.

The increasing sophistication of AI tools underscores the need to prioritize not just what we create, but why and for whom. The experts building these technologies recognize this, and their call for a renewed focus on human qualities like wisdom is a vital one. It’s a reminder that technology, at its best, should augment our humanity, not diminish it.

As we navigate this evolving landscape, fostering wisdom – through education, reflection, and a commitment to empathy – will be essential to ensuring that creativity continues to serve the greater good. This isn’t simply a matter of technological progress; it’s a matter of shaping a future where innovation is guided by compassion and a genuine concern for the well-being of all.
