AI in Healthcare: Building Trust & Overcoming Adoption Barriers

AI in Healthcare: Building Trust & Overcoming Adoption Barriers

March 19, 2026 Ananya Mittal - World Editor News

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into healthcare holds immense promise, but realizing its full potential hinges on building trust among clinicians. A recent discussion highlighted the critical role clinician involvement plays in fostering safe and reliable AI adoption within medical settings. As patients increasingly turn to AI for health information, understanding and addressing barriers to clinician acceptance is paramount.

The Growing Reliance on AI for Health Information

Patients are no longer solely relying on traditional sources like Dr. Google for medical information. they are increasingly using AI models such as Grok, Gemini, and Claude. James Barry, MD, MBA, a neonatologist and professor of pediatrics-neonatology at University of Colorado Anschutz NICU, noted this shift. Rather than dismissing information patients find through AI, clinicians should engage with it, examining the AI’s output alongside their own expertise. “I’ve been starting to invite [AI] into the conversation,” Barry said. “If they say, ‘Grok told me this,’ I say, ‘OK, show me what Grok told you, and let’s look at that, and then I’ll show you what I’m thinking about, my resources, and invite that in.’ It does accept longer. But I think that’s part of it.”

Hesitancy Among Clinicians

Despite the growing presence of AI in patient inquiries, adoption among clinicians themselves remains surprisingly low. A recent survey of medical groups and institutions revealed that only about one-third to one-half of clinicians reported using AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude in the past week. This hesitancy stems from several factors, including physician burnout, a steep learning curve, and concerns about accuracy and legal implications. Physicians are already facing significant burdens, and adding another tool to their workflow can feel overwhelming.

Amy S. Oxentenko, MD, FACP, FACG, AGAF, a gastroenterologist and professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic, emphasized the require for clinician-focused education on how to effectively use AI models. “It’s like learning a new language,” Barry said. Concerns about the accuracy of AI-generated content and potential legal ramifications also contribute to clinician reluctance. Some fear that AI could diminish the role of clinicians or alter the doctor-patient relationship.

Early Adopters and Efficiency Gains

Despite these challenges, some clinicians are beginning to integrate AI into their workflows and are experiencing positive results. Barry, for example, has replaced PubMed with AI tools like Perplexity, Consensus, and OpenEvidence for research, significantly reducing the time required to gather information. “Something that in the past would have taken me 4 hours to learn, takes me 30 minutes,” he reported.

Oxentenko initially resisted using ambient listening for note-taking, confident in her existing efficiency. However, after realizing she couldn’t discuss the tool with colleagues without trying it herself, she began using it and found it saved her approximately half an hour during a clinical half-day, allowing her to address emails and in-basket tasks more effectively.

Addressing Barriers to Adoption

To encourage wider adoption, several steps are necessary. Clinicians need opportunities to experiment with AI tools and understand their capabilities firsthand. Addressing concerns about accuracy and legal liability is also crucial. Medical training programs must incorporate AI education to prepare future clinicians for a healthcare landscape increasingly shaped by this technology.

The need for ongoing education is paramount. Clinicians must be equipped with the knowledge and skills to critically evaluate AI-generated information and integrate it responsibly into their practice. This includes understanding the limitations of AI models and recognizing potential biases.

The Evolving Role of AI in Medical Training

The integration of AI into medical training raises critical questions about the future of healthcare education. While AI can be a valuable tool for learning and skill development, it should not replace the core fundamental training that clinicians need. A balance must be struck between leveraging the benefits of AI and ensuring that trainees receive a comprehensive and well-rounded education. American Airlines has issued travel alerts for several Middle Eastern locations, highlighting the need for adaptable planning in a changing world, a skill that also applies to integrating new technologies like AI.

As AI continues to evolve at a rapid pace, it is essential for clinicians to remain engaged and informed. By actively participating in the development and implementation of AI tools, they can help shape a future where AI enhances, rather than replaces, the human element of healthcare. The U.S. Embassy in Beirut has issued a security alert, reminding us of the importance of staying informed and prepared for evolving circumstances, a principle that extends to the adoption of new technologies in healthcare.

Moving forward, the focus should be on fostering a collaborative environment where clinicians, researchers, and developers work together to create AI solutions that are safe, effective, and trustworthy. This requires open communication, transparency, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
